Print To Tape???

rstein wrote on 12/24/2001, 5:18 PM
Hi, I am a newbie to digital video, but after a lot of research and experimentation with lower quality stuff, settled on a Sony TRV-17 with A-D pass-through to suck my hundreds of hours of analog tapes (Beta, VHS, 8 and Hi-8) to DV then record them out back to mini-DV.

Vegas Video is great, but there's one part that confuses me. On the Video Capture application, there's an option to "print to tape" and the documentation implies that this works with DV devices (though what I'm seeing suggests it only works analog).

The problem is, I pick a DV .avi file that I don't need rendered, and simply want to firewire back to the camera. I cannot get the "print to tape" function to work - it displays on my monitor and speakers, but nothing goes through the 1391 to the camera.

Note that I have no problems from the "main" VV3 program using Tools->Print to DV tape. Unfortunately, that requires lots of render time that shouldn't be needed for a "pure" compliant .avi file. Right?

Thanks, and Happy Holidays everyone!
Bob.

Hi, I have the same problem too, I tried many times and in middle of precessing screen shows--Error occures while rendering file -------, make sure you have the write access and make sure you have enoght space, even though I still have big capacity, I donnot know what is the problem, we better ask Sonic tech support

You guys are talking about 2 different things:

1) In the Video Capture program after loading a file in the print to tape tab's Print Queue...I assume you're using 3.0...the video previews to the screen. You can click the Preview on Device to preview the footage on the device without actually printing. This is similar to Vegas' external monitor.

You can also hit the Record on Device button (you may need to expand/maximize the Video Capture window to see it) to preview the footage on the device and automatically engage the record mechanism on the device, if the device supports device control like most DV devices. This is similar to Vegas' Print from the Timeline option. There are also some Print to Tape Preferences that you can adjust from within Video Capture.

2) I believe you're talking about actually performing a render in Vegas, right?

Deef, I am exactly talking about the "Print to Tape" in the CAPTURE portion of the program. As you just implied again, using this on a "kosher" DV-compliant AVI file SHOULD cause a DV device attached to an OHCI-compliant 1394 bus to (a) start running in "record" mode, and (b) dumping the AVI file to that device.

It doesn't work. The AVI displays on-screen (of the PC monitor), but no joy on the DV camcorder.

This would be a really cool feature, and I assume that for a "pure" AVI, there is no reason that VV needs to "render" this on its way back to the camera. Am I wrong about that?

If not, I would be happy to work with you to describe in detail how the "print to tape" feature is not working as described.

Thanks,
Bob.

Rstein:
To start your print to tape session, are you clicking on a button labeled "Record to Device" or not.

There is a sort of status window on the right portion of this screen which, for some reason, wants to default to a width that, while not covering the area where this "Record to Device" button is located, causes that button to blank out and become invisible.

I don't doubt that you know exactly what you're talking about, but, I experienced the problem with the disappearing button, and think it worth clarification.

Can you use the preview on device button to view footage on the device?
rstein wrote on 12/28/2001, 2:42 PM
Nope.

When I try to preview, there is a small rectangular black area (looks like a video overlay?) on my computer monitor's display, but nothing to the camcorder.

When I select "record to device" the PC's monitor goes to full screen playback of the AVI (with sound through my PC speakers), but nothing to the DV camcorder. At the end of the playback, a dialog box stating "Print to tape has completed" displays.

It would be most excellent if we could get this working to actually pipe this output to DV, as I'm sure that's the intention. I've gone through the preferences/settings with a fine-tooth comb, and am at a loss.

Thanks again,
Bob.

Caruso,

No, I see that button, it just then displays the AVI full screen on my monitor, without attempting to send anything to the DV camcorder.

I'm sure this is something elemental, but I'm stumped!

Right, you've got full screen file playback enabled. Goto Preferences->Preview tab and uncheck "Allow full-screen file playback via Preview on Device or Record to Device"

Problem solved.

Thanks again, I knew it was something dumb I was doing! :-)
