Print-To-Tape (Again)

Hello everyone,

Sorry to start this mess up again. After watching the recent thread from Firefighter with great interest (since I was experience the same thing with PTT), I followed all the advice that was given. And it really made things better, but I'm not there yet. I am still experiencing an occasional flicker (droppped frame/blue screen/static) and when this happens, I can hear the hard drive thrashing. All other apps shut-down (explorer and systray only things running!) Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Here all my specs.....

Dell 8100 Dimension 1.3MH 256Mb RAM (BIOS current)
OS = ME (don't laugh, it's worked great so far)
Camera = Sony TRV103 going through firewire to Dell Moviemaker 1394 board
Project on separate HD (DMA enabled) (not sure of HD speed, how can you tell?)

Do you have the same problem whether you PTT from the SB or from VidCap?

Pardon my ignorance, but not sure what the SB or VidCap is. I only PTT from the time line.

Do the main tweaks for ME from www.videoguys.com. I've had solid PTT from Timeline and Vidcap, also Pinnacle Studio DV on my Compaq 1.3/ME/128RDRAM/multi HD system. Things you don't want........ Auto run for CD......Screen Saver........
Vid HD on same IDE buss as OS HD..........Dynamic Virt. memory (set to fixed 1g min. and max. and call it good)..........Cheap FW card (mine stutters on ext. mon. preview, but not PTT from TL or Vidcap, I think it's a bios thing. Can't shut off 1394 network for the life of me.)
Hope one or more of these does it for ya. If you're running a VIA chipset, look for newer bios (4in1) update. Caution with BIOS upgrades. Graphic card driver updates could help.
Also try turning down/off your graphics card acceleration if nothing else works. Right click main windows screen.
Another thing is:
right clicking my computer icon, device manager, + sign of 1394 buss controller, right click properties, settings, and check the box for "support non-compliant devices".
A fresh reload of Direct X 8 (two part) or 8.1 might fix you up. Just load over what ever DX you have now.

Thanks, Craig. I finally realized that VidCap is video capture and TL is Timeline. I don't have any problems with vidcap, just PPT from the TL. After taking all of your suggestions and replacing FW card to an Adaptec Duo Connect, I finally got a good print. Just hope it continues.
