Print to Tape definition

Does Print to Tape record the video as it is played onto the DV tape so it can then be plugged into the TV and played? Or does print to tape record the data from the timeline onto the tape for later retrieval and editing keeping all the Vegas envelopes, panning, color corrections, etc... In tact for manipulation in the future?

What you get on the tape is only the finished video render. It does not include any of the editing information from the timeline. This information is stored in the .veg file.

Are you shopping for Vegas? New to Video editing?

Print to Tape is Vegas' term for transferring a completed project in DV format via your computer's firewire port to the DV in port of your digital camera. The end result is a digital tape containing your original footage with all the editing you performed within Vegas.

Many Vegas users use composite video/audio cords to pass the signal coming into the DV cam on to our VCR so that we get a VHS (or BETA) tape instead of a digital videocassette.

As I mentioned, Vegas calls this process Print to Tape, although it might more accurately be called play to tape - as it happens in real time.

My first video editing on the computer involved use of products from Pinnacle - the term in Pinnacle is Make Movie. The process is virtually identical.

None of the underlying information is passed to the tape. Although you could capture (re-capture) the edited version of your project from the DV tape back to your computer and manipulate it further, the newly captured file will be an .avi of the edited production. Clips that you cut during your original editing session, for instance, will not be present.

I'm not certain how someone with the computer saavy to find this site might still need to ask such a basic question, but I hope my reply has answered your question.

Good luck and happy New Year.

Thanks for the answers. I have been editing for a couple years with Pinnacle 7 & 8. I just purchased Vegas about a month ago and am climbing the steep learning curve. So far I am very impressed with what it can do, however it can be complicated at times. The data to be stored on the tape was not clearly defined in the .pdf manual or help file within Vegas. The Print to Tape phrase sounded like we were printing data not recording video. That is what threw me. Thank you for taking the time to answer my basic question.
