Print to tape from timeline... no device control?!

Cheesehole wrote on 1/9/2002, 1:43 PM
hi,
does anyone else have this problem? DV Device control works in Vidcap and every other application, but in VV3 when i go to Tools | Print video to DV tape
to try to print straight DV from the timeline with some transitions, the choice for automated DV device control is greyed out! I only have 'manual' as an option.

my deck is Sony DSR-11 and my Firewire card is SIIG.

thanks.

Sounds like you may have lost the connection to the DV device. Try cycling the camera power off/on- that usually brings it back.

While you're at it, make certain you don't have the cassette tab set for write-protect. This will produce the greyed out device control about which you speak. I know. . . spent a couple of hours one afternoon trying to figure out why I had lost that device control option.

Would be nice if a write-protected cassette would cause a VV30 reaction that is more specifically to the point - "check cassette" or "device not ready" or something would be nice.

Had the same problem with my Panasonic NV EX3
Look at http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=86369

for the way it works for me

Hey! I just tried our DSR-11 and it's doing the same thing. Is there a fix? The workaround listed in this thread is a bit ridiculous - easier to just use Premiere or SCLive - but I'd really like to be able to simply use VV3.

sorry to hear you're having the same problem, but at least i'm not the only one! so, do you have DV control in Vegas Capture? I do. it's only when i try to print to tape from the timeline that i can only select Manual.

thanks for responding SonicEPM, but that didn't solve my problem.

Again, i have DV Device control using the Vegas Capture application. I can batch capture, i can print to tape, use the transport controls, etc... all the DV Device controls are funtional in Vegas Capture.

In Vegas Video 3 i go to Tools|Print Video to DV Tape... i hit Next --> Next and then i get to the screen where i can choose Manual, or 'Use Device Control'.

only I _cannot_ choose 'Use Device Control' because it is greyed out. my only choice is 'Manual'.

since one application can use DV Device control with no problems, but the other cannot, this is clearly a problem with Vegas Video. there is no other reason that one program would work, and another one wouldn't.

can anyone else out there verify if Vegas Video will print to tape with automatic control to a Sony DSR-11?

can Sonic Foundry do this test? is there anything i can do to help? i'd really like to get this working. my reputation is on the line, since i have recommended this exact set-up to others.

thanks,

>do you have DV control in Vegas Capture?

I _think_ so. But I wasn't actually trying to capture - I was trying to print from the timeline. I also noticed it wouldn't even hold a freeze frame - i.e., if I just dropped the cursor on the timeline it would blink on and off.

I didn't waste a lot of time playing with it. Once I noticed Premiere and SCLive were working, I hooked the 1394 to my Canon ZR-10 and used that with VV3.

Odd since earlier SF has said the lag problems with the Canon ZR10 could be solved by using more expensive decks. True, no lag with the DSR-11, but...

hi there...new to this forum and new to VV...and having the same problem printing to tape..both from a SonyVaioLaptop and an Athelon1.6PC to a DSR 11 deck.
Greyed out area...no device control. But im sure it worked once????
Noticed that the record tab on video tape was on "safe"..switched to "rec" mode, and voila...recorded to tape worked prefectly on both Laptop and PC. Also noticed if no tape in DSR 11 deck...no device control...makes sense. Worked for me...hope it works for u.
Being an old media100 editor ( 5years) and just starting to get the hang of VV3...i luv it

harrysmr:
Can you print to tape from *timeline* with Automatic device control? that is what this thread is about. I have DV device control from Vegas Capture.

SoFo have already confirmed that this functionality is missing from Vegas and they will *try* to address it in an update.

Hi,
yes i can print from timeline....all i do is put in new tape ....go to tools...print to tape..pal dv template...next...give a timelength for colorbars..next menu gives me a device timecode of 00:00 (new tape) hit finish....off it goes...easy.
Computer. Athlon 1.6 gig OS WindowsXPpro, Swann Video works ieee1394 firewire card (local australian product $us50) and sony dsr 11 deck...No problems.

Keep this thread alive please- we need your real world feedback.

It would be NICE if all devices that claimed to be "OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394DV" actually conformed to the spec and behaved identically. They don't- same with MMC CD drives. We have tons of test equipment here, but since we don't and will never own EVERY deck, camcorder, 1394 card, or CD burner, your hardware feedback is very helpful.

"Print to tape" works both on my PC as well as a Sony Viao Laptop.
Both operate under WindowsXPpro.
The Laptop has the Sony inbuilt 1394 card, whereas the PC needed a second 1394 card installed, as the first a "1394 ADVANSYS PCI card" caused nothing but problems.
Replaced the card with a "Swann Firewire IEEE1394 card" and have had no problems since.
Maybe that's all it is??
