Print to Tape issues may be mostly audio related.

One of the most often seen complaints on the forums for Vegas 2, 3, 4 and probably 5 in the future are Print to tape issues. When you search it, you get a really long list. The biggest problem seems to be stuttering issues.
SF posted How to ensure successful DV Capture and Print to Tape which contains a wealth of great suggestions.

Others have posted suggestions such as:
-defragging
-disabling DV device control
-defragging
-closing gaps on the timeline
-turning off video preview window during PTT (still haven't figured out how to do that one since I preview on an external monitor anyway and that turns it off automatically)

I have played around with this and decided to try it by messing with the audio only and not touching the video. I had 2 two-hour plus videos which I was making DV masters for. Both had some stuttering issues.
I put the rendered videos back on the timeline and closed all gaps in the audio only. That worked on one, but not the other. Then I tried the following on both and in BOTH cases the stuttering stopped:
I put the rendered files back on the timeline. Without making any changes I prerendered and printed to tape from the timeline. The only thing which prerendered were the W64 audio files. Using the manual 10 second coundown I recorded via firewire into my DV deck in the usual manner. The results on both masters were flawless.
Since I am a firm disbeliever in "defragging cures all" I left scattered stray files all over my three hard drives and didn't even defrag Drive C. I even spit through the case fan into the box just to show my defiance. It still worked.
I captured some video so that my "D" drive was almost maxed out and went through the procedure again and it still worked. Stuttering gone, by working on ONLY the audio.
Maybe some of you can try it and post a follow up to see if it works for you. I am using a PIII 1GHZ with plenty of ram and W98SE. I know that most of you are using Windows XP, so try it with that. I don't think the OS should matter unless you are maybe low on resources from using XP without a colostomy bag full of ram. Keep us all posted. Maybe we can resolve a long standing issue.
