Print to tape on DVD-recorders

Hello,

I bought a new dvd-recorder with a DV-IN. When I work in the timelime of Vegas and click on the monitor-symbol I can watch the live picture via the DVD-Recorder on my TV-Set.

When I want to "print to tape" a completed project into the DVD-Recorder via the same connection the capture modul says "cannot connect to device". Is there a way to play out the movies "blind" meaning can I trick "Video Catpure" to play out the project without a "connection"?

If you're using VidCap for printing, go to Options / Preferences / General and uncheck Enable DV Device control.

If you're printing from Vegas' timeline then choose Manual (no device control).

Thanks but I already tried that. Doesn't work. It shows an error:

"The device ......... could not be opened"

I could be wrong, but believe that only a DV camcorder will work. If your system is fast enough, you could work around the problem by rendering your project, then, bring that rendered file to the timeline, and simply play the timeline to an external monitor. You'll be able to capture the video via the firewire connection, but, you'll have to route the audio through your sound card's analog out jack(s) into whatever anolog inputs are available on the recording device that you are using.

I suppose you could also simply play the timeline if you don't have space on your computer to store both the project and its rendered file. The only problem with that is that FX that need rendering to display smoothly would either have to be selectively pre-rendered, or you would need one really fast machine.

I share the above from memory. I haven't had to try any of those approaches since version 2.0 of the software.

Something else you could also try - is to simply disable device control (as suggested by the previous poster), and pass the firewire signal, audio and video) through a camcorder with its output connected to your ultimate recording device. That would work, also.

Good luck. Post back and let us know what worked for you.

I have a Sony DV deck and it works fine either with or without manual device control. It doesn't have to be a camera.

When using VidCap If you have your firewire connected to the recorder and you can see the picture on a monitor connected to it's output you can record by starting the recording manually on the recorder then clicking PLAY on the Print to Tape control. I don't understand how you are seeing the image on an external monitor connected that way and not being able to also record.

I made this successfuly with a Philips DVDR 75 and use it for previewing also.

Never got this working with a Liteon 5005...

Thanks a lot for your help. The thing ist. Because I now have a dv-in possibility on my dvd-recorder I would really like to use that feature. I used to play out analogue.

I can preview the picture via firewire-cable connected to the dvd-recorder. But whenever I switch to VideoCapture and would like to play out it won't work.

I can only preview that file on my pc-monitor. When I start VideoCatpure I get that error-message mentioned above. Once that has passed I can try whatever I want. I'm not able to play out the file because vegas probably wants a camcorder - signal.

Try using a decent capture/playback utility like Scenalyzer - I've never had anything but problems getting vidcap to work correctly.

You can also try Video2DV. Beyond just DV files if you have the system it will take any file and convert it to DV on the fly and send it out via firewire.

Well ... I always thought that Videocapture would be a decent tool. I tried it again. Whatever I do - I always get that error "The device Microsoft DV Camera und VCR" could not be opened.

I can watch the movie within the print-to-tape on the computer monitor (FF .. REW etc), but it dosen't appear on my TV which is - as I said - hocked up on the dvd-recorder.

Within Vegas itself (timeline) I can watch the picture on the TV (but of course without sound).

But I might consider the tools you mentioned .....

Have you tried printing to tape from within Vegas? Tools/Print Video to DV Tape.
