Print to Tape problem

dustindewynn wrote on 6/3/2006, 10:53 AM
I am using an ATI X800 All-in-wonder card and S-Video connector. I rendered a project as AVI and am using the Capture Video \ Print to Tape tab to print the AVI to my camcorder. The ATI driver is selected (Rage Theater). However, when I hit "Record to device" I get a popup telling me "the file format is not correct for the current device."
What file format do I need to render to in order for this to work?
Any help appreciated - I have not gotten a reply yet from Support.

Check to make sure you are capturing from the avi file that you rendered. - i.e. the one where you see the .avi extension and not the veg. file. This happened to me once and that was the problem.

Do you have a digital camcorder with Firewire?

AFAIK the print to tape will only print to a Firewire camcorder in which case your AVI files need to be a DV AVI.

If you must use the S-Video output to connect to your camcorder then use Media Player to play the rendered file, send the output to the TV out of the video card, and manually record the output on your camcorder.

Thanks, I just installed a new motherboard with Firewire and tried running the Print to Tape feature. I selected the IEEE 1394 device driver from the dropdown and had the camera on, but it says the device is unavailable.
Also, DV AVI did not show up as an option when I tried to render the project. AVI is there, but not DV AVI. Am I missing something?

Choose AVI as the file type, then under Template choose DV NTSC or DV PAL depending on where you are. You'll want to set the camera to VCR or Playback mode.

If I just want to make a DV copy (capture the DV in then print to tape to a new one) is there any real "rendering" going on with print to tape as AVI file? Or, say I add just few cuts & chapter marks -- does the "render" take the same huge amount of time as rendering to a mpeg? It'd be nice to know prior to making my mini DV copies.

With no editing other than cuts and trimming, Vegas does not need to render. It simply copies the frames bit-for bit. This process is usually very fast.

Chapter marks won't be preserved when you print to tape.
