Print-to-tape problems have me stumped

I've done my best to remove pilot error from the equation on this one:

I've captured DV through Vegas's capture tool, and set it to the timeline. Adding a few transitions and titles, I've rendered the file out to the NTSC DV .avi template provided from the drop-down Render As menu.

As a consequence, reloading the file onto the timeline, right-clicking it and choosing Properties yields the following stats:

(Reading from top to bottom in the "Stream properties" section)

Attributes: 720x480x24
Format: DV
Frame rate: (greyed out) 29.970 (NTSC)
Field order: Lower field first
Pixel aspect ratio: 0.9091
Alpha channel: None

Ok, so I'm fairly certain this is a DV file -- byte for byte an exact copy of what could theoretically appear on a DV tape. Here's where things get weird -- I try to Print To Tape from the timeline; the Wizard loads, taking me through the first few steps, and then it informs me that I need to re-render "over 80% of the media."

I've successfully, though in part through a combination of luck and blind button-pushing, gotten a print-to-tape from the Capture tool window, but I cannot for the life of me print from the timeline. This is frustrating.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

- jim

Hi Jim,

When you attempt to print to tape, you are also using the default NTSC DV template? (and the clip is bare, no FX etc.)

Do you have any FX saved as track defaults that are present on opening?

Something is forcing the Dv clip to be recompressed again before print to tape.

Try this:

1)hold ctrl+shift while starting Vegas- this resets all prefs to their defaults.

2) start a new NTSC DV project

3) add your rendered DV clip to the timeline- don't change anything in project settings, add no filters- we just want a DV clip in a DV project

4) Tool>Print to DV tape> Choose NTSC DV format

5) What you should see is Vegas sniffing the file to see if anything needs rendering, then the audio getting prepped, then the print countdown dialog. You should not see the 80% message at this time.

6) If 5 is true, go back and look at your original project- composite level slider not at 100? motion blur on? fx present somewhere?

SonicEPM -- thanks! Problem solved by going to the defaults, though the opacity wasn't the issue -- *shrug*

A faster way would be to play that rendered file out to tape via the VidCap program that comes with Vegas.

Ok, so now reverting to defaults lets me print-to-tape, only with a minor render of a .W64 file for each of the media files I have loaded. This I can't figure out how to get around -- for small clips the render time is near nothing, but for larger clips there's a bit of a wait.

I just captured through Vegas (after opening it with ctrl+shift), dropped the file in the timeline, and tried a PTT and it happened still :/

Advice -- or is this normal?

Thanks,

There is no away around the .w64 file creation stage- this always happens during DV print to tape preparation.

Use VidCap 3.0 to print to tape if you don't want to render a W64 file. You can run it from inside Vegas (media pool, camera icon) or by itself with the run feature under the Windows start menu.
