"Print To Tape" problems w/ JVC GR-DVL9800u & Actiontec 1394 capture card!!!!

brockrexius wrote on 1/28/2002, 1:54 PM
I've been getting the run-around between JVC, Actiontec, Sonic Foundry and Dell...each claiming it's the other's issue....

The Trouble: I can capture just fine, but when I go to Preview on camera/Print to tape...my end product is severely broken up w/ green vertical stripes in between. I'm new at all this, so it could be something simple. I've been changing all kinds of property settings and render settings hoping I can get a clean product....but no luck as of yet. Anyone have any experience with these products or any idea what my problem might be????!!!!!

Did you install some bundled software that came with the 1394 card? MGI video software perhaps?

If so, please remove the MGI stuff completely.
brockrexius wrote on 1/28/2002, 2:24 PM
Nope. The firewire card was my friends and he had already lost the Videowave disc. I did, however, download a trial version of MGI Videowave before I bought Video Vegas 2.0. But since then I have completely wiped clean my C drive and started over...so that stuffs not on my drive any more. I'm running a Western Digital 100Gig D drive for my raw video captures while Video Vegas and Capture is on my 30Gig C drive. I disconnected the power cable that connected both my D drive and Firewire card(Actiontec thought that might be the problem), but that didn't help. They also thought I should try and update my DV driver, but JVC offers no such driver and my manual says the one I'm using is the correct driver. Any other thoughts?
SonyEPM wrote on 1/28/2002, 4:07 PM
The DV driver is installed by Windows- no 3rd party driver is needed.

Please confirm that you have checked the "Ignore 3rd party codecs" general pref, and that your video device pref is set to output DV. Both true? Sounds codec related...
brockrexius wrote on 1/28/2002, 5:03 PM
I will check that out and reply here later......thanks so much for the info! If you can finally get me up and running cleanly...you'll be next-to-God on my "hero list"!!!

I can't find the pref menu that allows me to check "ignore 3rd part codecs" or "output DV". I looked all over before responding...is it in Video Capture or Vegas Video? I'm using versions 2.0....were you referring to 3.0? Again, I'm a rook and don't necessarily no my way around the software yet. Thanks for your patience as you work me through this.....

Sorry- these prefs are only in Version 3. Please update version 2 to the latest, 2.0h (from updates at www.sonicfoundry.com).

Next,go to device manager and look under imaging devices- what driver is listed for the 1394 card?

brockrexius wrote on 1/29/2002, 2:24 PM
Actually, I think I am using 2.0h....yep, that's affirmative. The driver says Actiontec 1394 FireWire Card, Provider: Microsoft, Date: 4-26-2000
SonyEPM wrote on 1/29/2002, 3:20 PM
Could be the driver, and/or the codec. Check this info for details:

According to the document you referred me to, I am using the correct driver for my camera...the one assigned to it automatically by my computer(Windows 98SE). My FireWire card driver was switched to the Actiontec version(from the one assigned by my computer) that came with my card in an effort to correct the problem we are dealing with. The driver I "was" using had the same problem, so I don't think the issue is with my FireWire card driver....unless the one the computer assigned to me in the first place wasn't right. I'd like to here more about the possible Codec issues, since I haven't followed that rabbit trail yet. Lead on Master........

Ok, is there an Action, DVsoft, or other alien DV codec on your system?
brockrexius wrote on 1/29/2002, 5:26 PM
Where would I look to find that out? Render As Custom?
SonyEPM wrote on 1/30/2002, 8:25 AM
for starters, please post all the codecs displayed in
control panel>system>device manager> sound,video and game controllers>video codecs...

and

in the Vegas .avi format dropdown list
brockrexius wrote on 1/30/2002, 12:00 PM
I'm not seeing any "video codecs" listed under sound, video, and game controllers....all that's there is:

Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V
SB AudioPCI 64V Legacy Device
Wave Device for Voice Modem

As for the Vegas .avi format dropdown list, I'm not exactly sure where that is....but the only place I remembered seeing any codecs was on my custom "render as" screen when NTSC DV was used as my template(if that's not the right place to look, please instruct me otherwise)...so here it is:

Cinepak Codec by Radius
Indeo Video 5.04
Intel 4:2:0 Video V2.50
Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
Logitech Video (YVU9)
Microsoft H.261 Video Codec
Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
Microsoft Video 1
NTSC DV
NTSC DV Widescreen
PAL DV
PAL DV Widescreen
TrueMotion RT 2.0 by Duck
Uncompressed
VDOnet VDOWave
Vivo H.263 Video Codec
brockrexius wrote on 1/30/2002, 12:29 PM
I did some more searching in the Control Panel and found a list of Codecs under Multimedia Properties>Devices>Multimedia Drivers>Video Compression Codecs. Here's the list:

Cinepak (TM)
Duck TrueMotion Codec
Indeo (TM) R3.1
Indeo (TM) R3.2
Indeo Video 5.04
Intel H.263 Video Codec
MPEG-4 Video High Speed Compressor (MT)
msh261 (m261)
msh263 (I420)
msyuv (uyuv)
msyuv (yuy2)
msyuv (yvyu)
RLE
VDOnet VDOWave Video Codec
Video 1
Video Codec (yvu9)
Vivo H.263 Video Codec Version 2.0.0

I'm still seeing VideoWave stuff here...

check your email and we'll take this offline. Once fixed, I'll post the results.

GOOD NEWS!!!!!! I went to check my 15 frame clip that I rendered(to e-mail to you) to see if I still had the same problems....and it played cleanly!!! I checked all my other clips and projects that haven't previewed/printed to tape cleanly and they all work flawlessly. It must have been the DMA settings on the two hard drives that we checked? What else could it have been? Anyway, I'm in the process of rendering my big project right now to see if there are any issues with that...but I don't expect any since the other test renders work now. Thank you so much for the help and I will post if/when I have any other problems.

ps. You can't see me right now...but I'm jumping up and down with joy.....
brockrexius wrote on 1/30/2002, 5:23 PM
Might you explain to me what a DMA is...and why that appeared to be the problem?
Cheesehole wrote on 1/30/2002, 6:24 PM
enabling DMA allows ATA33/66/100 hard drives to run at their full speed. you have to enable it so your drive is fast enough to handle DV transfers.

Thanks for the info, "cheesy"....
