Print to tape question

A search on print-to-tape did not help. This is very newV, but I need to ask ,as the V5 manual does not explain all

I have a video file (.veg) that I rendered in wmv for the web and also in mpeg for a DVD. Now I want to print that file back to tape in case I need to make changes to it later, but I don't want it taking up space on my computer in the mean time.

Questions:
1. Does if matter which of the rendered formats I print back to tape? I was going to print the .veg file.

2. I tried to print to tape following the instructions in the V5 manual. They said to use NTSC DV 24p (2-3-3-2) template if I intend to bring the file back into the timeline as source material. My project started a really lengthy rendering process that I ended up cancelling. I don't see why it would it have to re-rendered.

I did a print-to-tape only once, several months ago when I was an ultra newV, and I know didn't go through all of that rerendering stuff then.

3. I'm using a Sony PD170 camera. Should it be set in VCR or Record mode when I do this?

Thanks sooo much for any help.

1. You can ONLY print to tape with an avi file. If you've got the original veg, it will need to render as an avi file. If you've only got the mpeg or the wmv file, it will be rendering those to avi format, albeit with a quality hit due to the transcode.

Your PD170 won't support 24p, so I'm not sure where the 2-3-3-2 pulldown insertion comment is coming from. It started a lengthy render because the system thought you wanted to convert 60i into 24p.
With the .veg open, just simply go Tools>Print to tape and everything should go just fine.

2. PD170 should be in VCR mode, it will be stopped/started/recording when it gets instructions from VidCap or the Print To Tape dialog.

A VEG files is not a video file. A VEG file is a project file. If you are printing to tape, it would be best to print from the original files instead of the WMV or MPG files

To print to tape, simply open the VEG file and then choose Tools - Print Video to DV Tape.

Your camera should be in VCR mode.

"I'm not sure where the 2-3-3-2 pulldown insertion comment is coming from."

I got it from the V5 user manual, but on checking back now ,after your reply, I can see that I misunderstood.
Replies most helpful - will try PTT now.
Thank you!

It worked! and it was super easy. I rendered my veg file to avi and printed it to tape in no time flat.

Now one more question, you'll probably think it's pretty dumb, but I really don't know .....

Having done this, will I be able to make changes to the file that's on the tape if I recapture it, EVEN IF I delete all the events and any reference to that file whatsover from my hard drive.?
Just have to make very sure before I houseclean.
Thanks again.

Yes. You can recapture and edit that file. However you WON'T have all the extra original footage to work with.

The recaptured file also won't contain the .veg file so you will only have the results of your editing. You won't have the project file so you won't be able to simply reopen the project and tweak. It will simply be the finished output and nothing more. If you want to be able to pick up where you left off and modify your editing. For example, you won't be able to edit titles, adjust effects, change transitions, etc. You'll have everything you put into the project, but it will all be "fixed". Any further editing you do will have to use this recaptured file as if it was raw camera footage (which it basically is now). If you want to change a title you'll have to cut out that section and redo it from scratch.

On the other hand, if you have saved your original source clips and .veg file you would simply be able to open up the text even box and your text will be editable.

Hopefully this is a useful warning and i'm not confusing you too much. ;)

Geesh - I'd better invest in an external hard drive (or 2) to transfer all my events, PLUS print to tape, PLUS forget about recording over my original tapes!

Can't stand clutter, and when I hear of people storing a dozen or so hard drives under their bed it makes me shudder. I have no storage room left at all in my small space. It's the one aspect of editing I'm not keen on at all - having to keep nearly everything, "just in case". Oh well, such is life in editing land.

Thanks for all the info everyone :-)

hey - just noticed I'm a poet too - "clutter" makes me "shudder"!!
