in my (limited) experience, i wouldn't trust 'home' burnt dual layers to necessarily play on every dvd player, rather the opposite.

however, my experiences were quite some time ago, and maybe since then things have changed?

Verbatim make a DL inkjet printable DVD that's probably as good as it gets. So far though I've only used them for backing up data. Like Leslie I feel there's enough drama with single layer DVDs without adding DL into the mix. If it will not fit much safer to make a two disk set and the cost is about the same.
Actually if I recall correctly I did master a DL disk that was going out for replication but that's a whole different matter.

I used to use these for doing HD DVD's (for the toshiba A1 hi def player... 1440*1080 @ 25Mb/s, mpeg2).

Never had a single failure.
