Printing to VHS

jag5311 wrote on 11/24/2003, 6:43 AM
Hi everyone,

Well I wanted to ask this question before I go and do a 2 hour render of my video and have it not work. I have about 1 1/2 of video that I want to put on a VHS. I know if I go to capture and then PRINT TO TAPE, this is how it could be done, BUT, how do I print to the tape the footage I have cut and spliced together. It seems to only want to use AVI files from my BINS. I did export the footage to a MPEG2 file the other night, but it won't let me export that to a tape.

What needs to be done?

Thanks
Bryan

Depending how you PC is connected to the VCR you can print from ther time line directly to tape. Vegas wil do prerender for this. I think you can get to that under tools. I do that alot because I want the tone and color bars in front of the footage. I normaly print to tape in my camcorder then copy that to VHS as I cannot out put analog, just firewire.

well, I am using the ADVC 100 to convert my signals, so chances are when output its converting my digital back to analog onto the tape. I will look under tools.

Thanks

I am offered two solutions here
{quote}
the tone and color bars in front of the footage
{/quote]

SMPTE Bars (NTSC)
and

COLOR BARS (NTSC)

I know this is called print to DV tape, but that will work with a vcr, right?

You can print to tape directly from the timeline but chances are a large portion of your project will have to be rendered anyway. I usually render to a DV .avi file and then use the VidCap utility to print to tape. Note that you must render to AVI and use the standard DV template with no changes at all in order for the print to tape to function.

When printing through the ADVC 100 unit to an analog VCR you will have to disable DV device control. In the VidCap utility this is under Options / General. If you are printing from the timeline then specify manual control when asked.

You mean

NTSC DV ?

or DEFAULT TEMPLATE (UNCOMPRESSED)

Use the appropriate DV template for your area, presumably NTSC if you're in North America. The default template (uncompressed) is NOT DV.

Correct.... it will work when you have a VCR plugged into your DV device (in this case the ADVC 100.

Just think of it like this... Vegas doesn't CARE what you have plugged in to the ADVC100... it is just printing DV to that device.

Also... a simple thing would be for you to test it with a short piece of DV video rather than the 2 hours or so that you actusally want to do. Why not just select a small portion of your timeline and do a print-to-tape of that? That will then prove to you that you can do it... or alternatively indicate that something is not working quite right. Either way.. you make progress.

Is it normal to get a PLAIN BLUE BACKGROUND with the words, PRINTING TO TAPE when using this feature? There are no numbers moving or showing what part of the film is currently being written.

Thanks

You should also check if the device you are sending video out to is configured for correct IN. My VCR has two LINE IN ports and when I did the "print to tape" for the first time in my life, I got two hours of nothing while the tv screen glowed blue. I have learned my lesson since. Hope this helps.

see its weird. This VCR has a set of outputs and a set of inputs on the back. There is an out for video(yellow), audio(white and red). The input is the same. So I hook up the video cables into the INPUT, plug the other half into my ADVC-100, the back of the unit has a firewire going into the computer. Then I rendered an AVI for NTSC DV and loaded that into the PRINT TO TAPE part of the capture utility. I got the blue screen and said PRINTING TAPE. Then it said it was finished whenever the video ended. I tried to play the tape and just had garbage, just a bunch of scrambled colors on the screen, so nothing wrote to the tape properly.

I can't imagine the vcr not being able to handle INPUT, i mean, why would it have it if it couldn't handle it.
Liam_Vegas wrote on 11/24/2003, 1:13 PM
I don't think anyone is suggesting your VCR cannot handle INPUT.

As a little bit more of a simpler test... let's see if you can at least PREVIEW from the Vegas timeline direct out to your VHS unit (which I assume has a TV or other monitor also attached).

Have you tried setting up extrenal Preview yet? That will allow you to see the video from the timeline without rendering. If you can get that working at least you know that all your cables and the ADVC-100 is setup correctly.

Did you untick "Enable DV device control"?

You should get a countdown to give you time to put the VCR into Record.

The PTT process should take around the same time as the video is long.

You can connect a monitor up to the VCR outputs to monitor what is being recorded onto the tape.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses.

Currently, I just have my vcr connected to my advc-100, so the only way for me to preview is through the computer. I might be able to find a tv around the house I can use, but I have to look.

If any of you have ever used the ADVC-100 and exporting something digital through it back to something analog, am I suppose to set it to DIGITAL IN and then attach the cords so they are:

Running from the BACK of the ADVC-100 unit and into the INPUT's on the back of the VCR.

All this time I have been trying it through the front of the advc-100 unit with DIGITAL IN.

Thanks
Bryan

Nevermind, that IS the way to do it. My test worked.

BTW - I never received a "countdown" but yes, I have DV control disabled. and the items saying "notify before printing to tape" are checked.

hmmmmm, I still wouldn't mnid trying this external device. I probably need to get an extra set of a/v cords huh

WOOHOO, got it to work. External preview now :)

Is it normal to not get sound via your external preview?
Liam_Vegas wrote on 11/24/2003, 2:15 PM
Preview only displays video with no audio. The print-to-tape will give you both of course.

Congrats on getting it all hooked up right. I also have an ADVC-100 that I'll be trying out for the first time, very soon. Sometimes dealing with the infrastructure of an NLE setup makes me feel a bit like Kirk in that old Star Trek episode with the Gorn. I keep stumbling around until I find the blast I'm looking for. i still wish V included audio with the external preview. Although V doesnt pass the audio back along the firewire, you can still tap the audio off your computer soundcard.
