Pro 21 not opening MP files from Project media to time line for editi

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/7/2025, 4:45 PM

I have been trying to resolve this issue for a week now this is my third email and I hope it is posted in the right place as advised by most recent response. I thought this would be easier to fix.
Vegas Pro 21 build 315 never had a problem before.

It has been a few days since I responded wrote/emailed  regarding my issue that I said I think I have fixed it. I haven't had a response to that email. After further investigation and testing my findings are that any mp4 I create using Magix AVC/AAC mp4 I cannot use it again to add to another project as it is just not visible in Pro21 on my PC but if I use Pro15, or Pro 21 on my laptop, everything works normally. I reinstalled Pro 21 twice with  no change. Any mp4 files that I created prior to 29th March all get accepted in PRO 21 on my PC but nothing since that crash date. There must be some fix. What do you think it is and if I can try something else.  I can of course open the VEG file but it doesn't matter what I render it as it doesn't show in Pro21 on PC  Perhaps build 315 needs to be an updated bug fix.

@Nick-Goward Try to enable or disable the "Enable Legacy AVC Decoding" and the "Enable Legacy HEVC Decoding" options in Preferences under the File I/O tab.... Toggle with those and see if it helps with your issue.

That's really strange. Does resetting VEGAS help?

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/7/2025, 7:24 PM

Thanks Roger very frustrating to say the least.reset did Nothing. My pc crashed trying to import about 30 mp4 files that created from *mov files. I can’t get at my pc for a few hours now.

RogerS wrote on 4/7/2025, 8:41 PM

So files VEGAS rendered can't be reimported into VEGAS without crashing but only on the desktop.

What's the GPU for this machine and the settings in preferences/ file io?

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/8/2025, 4:50 PM

Well Well Roger. just as well somebody understands the intracacies of software and what they all mean. i did as you said in preferences as both settings in file io did not have those boxes ticked, i ticked them and then saved the change. Miracle it all works again. thankyou so much. I hope it doesn't happen again. I thnink i will reboot the PC and see.

Hey Roger. I rebooted and all ok. However I also tested the Free Trial download VEg pro22 that i installed yesterday. Yesterday it was doing the same thing as V21, ie. wouldn't work, and again today but the Veg 22 version also had the same issue in the "file I/o" tab so once I ticked those boxes and restarted the program it also now works. Is that a problem with the latest downloads or just on my end i wonder. Just thought I ask. i am going to uninstall the Veg22 trial version now anyway.

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/8/2025, 5:38 PM

Out of curiosity I also just re-tested the Veg21 pro version that I downloaded onto my 10 year old laptop a few days ago to compare if I had the same problems on the laptop version as well. The two boxes to enable or disable the "file I/O" the AVC and HEVC were not ticked there either but the progam still performs opening the files that that coluld not be opened on my PC Verfsion. So I guess it isn't a download file issue and that perhaps for some reason my main PC Version unticked the tow boxes.

so now I can happily get on with creating a new video for my band at last. phew

I have used Vegas Pro since SPV12 with no issues importing MP4 files until I updated VP21 to Build 315. I also tried VP22 which had the same MP4 issues - program hangs up and eventually crashes. I just learned that instead of importing the MP4 file through the file drop down menu, just drag it to the media bin or directly to the time line and VP21 performs normally??

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/8/2025, 7:54 PM

Thankyou DetGrano. Interesting I will keep that in mind if it ever happens again … hope not. Did you read the most recent responses and solution regarding the “file I/O” changes you should remember that too.

If the media is AVC there's no need to check the experimental HEVC box. This is more a workaround than a fix but if it helps you then great.

@Nick-Goward Glad my suggestion worked for you.... Cause of this was mainly due to codec changes and upgrades in the most recent versions of Vegas Pro. The biggest hit was when quicktime selfishly ended support for windows completely, and even before that, having it stagnant in 32bit land for the longest while.

Nick-Goward wrote on 4/9/2025, 5:00 PM

thanks Steve. Firstly just wondering if you represent Magix or if you are a helpful private person with knowledge because I don't think they have been very helpful at all and just refer me to the forums and you may have noitced that another guy has same problem with a different drag and drop approach but I don't think that would be a permanent fix and a pain if you have to do that everytime.. Helpful to know that about codecs and Quicktime.... thanks. Intially I thought it a codec problem but didn't know and still don't know how to fix that if there is one and from the looks of it from your post there probably isn't one thanks to Quicktime. That doesn't explain why it works on my laptop though even though it is 10 years old it still works.. however I did disable windows updates for 2 months a few weeks ago on the laptop perhaps when that halt expires and my system wants to install new updates I could potentially inherit the same problem. What a rotten kanundrum. If I upgraded to Win11 would that help? I am guessing that mobile phones using "*.mov" files I will always have that problem. I haven't used my DSLR for recording videos for quite a while and may find same problem. I copied this from internet re my camera "The Canon 5D Mark III uses the H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) codec for video recording, saving files in the MOV format". Importing *.mov files is no problems but saving as an MP4 is that the problem.

Magix closed two tickets on me with no prior response except " did I do a reset".
