Pro 8c, AVCHD, i7 Processor

I'm configuring a new computer and to support older apps, I'd like to stay with Win XP 32 bit, which limits me to 3 Gb RAM. I figure I may as well stay with Vegas Pro 8c.

If I go with an Intel Quad-Core i7 920 2.66GHz processor and 3 Gb RAM, will I be able to edit AVCHD and get previews without stutter?

Thanks for any comments,

Dave

I get pretty good playback with a core2 quad 2.66 in XP Pro with 8.0c.

Even doing some CC (nothing too intense) it is pleasant.

Might want to check out the i5 -- I run AMD, so no 1st hand experience, but from everything I've seen unless you insist on running the fastest Intel has to offer, much more bang for the buck, especially or including video work... i.e. might be able to go faster than 2.66 & buy a nicer board & graphics for Cuda or Stream.

Prob. with XP is age... MS is working on win8 for 3 years from now. Vista/7 are a lot different internally than XP, & while developers kept compatibility for XP because no one liked Vista, with 7 that's changed. And MS is going to stop making 32 bit Windows. Makes more sense to get 7 64 & use the XP Virtual PC -- it's as close to seamless as you can *easily* get nowadays.

Case in point, ATI has already started to lag on XP drivers a bit -- not much, but enough to be noticed.

I can now say that an i5-750 CPU will run AVCHD in Vegas 9.0c very smoothly.
See this discussion: AVCHD

I built my i5-750. Got the chip and Gigabyte P55 motherboard for $200. Lots of bang for the buck! Doesn't have hyper-threading but doesn't seem to need it. Using Win7 64 bit and Vegas 9.0c 64 bit and the K-Lite 64 bit Codec. Very pleased to see that it is performing so well with AVCHD. My render times are running about half what they were on my Q6600 quad core. Using 8 gigs of Ram but can't see that the system is really using it all. Personally I can't see going with a new chip (like the i5 or i7) and sticking with XP unless legacy software is that important.
