Probably a very simple question

I'm "still" in the hobby stage and have a basic question regarding saving / maintaining of the timeline.
Here is my problem. In laymen terms: I'm working on a project (appr. 3 chapters of each 1 hour when completed, ready for rendering / burning) and I want to save the complete status / timeline incl. all vidoe and sound tracks with all its envelopes and tweeks etc etc etc etc - to allow me at a later date to manipulate the original timeline again and i.e. exchange certain portions of film and / or sound footage as needed.

I dont have the computer space to simply save / keep the time line of such projects. When saving to i.e. DVD (or Iomega REV) I'm loosing all 'working' applications.
Can - and if so how do I save original / raw material / timeline and to what media / storage solution (and connections).

Get yourself a 1TB external drive and use File | Save As... and check Copy media with project then select new folder on the external 1TB drive. If you naturally keep all of your media under one folder then you just need to copy that folder to the external drive.

If you have all of your material on your computer already, just save the PROJECT. It will save the timeline and all of your settings. At a later date open up Vegas and load the PROJECT file and it will recall all of your video and settings (unless you have deleted your footage).

But you will learn fast that you need a lot of Harddrive space for video work. Consider adding internal drives to your system. They will be much faster than an external drive.

I am actually looking for saving space "outside" the hardrive. Any suggestions ?

I like the Western Digital My Passport drives. They come in a variety of sizes and they are USB 2.0 which is fine for just transferring files for backup.

I agree with Johnny - Western Digital is a good choice - I'm also partial to Seagate externals; the company has been around a long time building hard drives for much their existence... they just released the first-ever 3TB external for $250 ...

Seagate

Maxtor makes decent drives as well; they are my third choice...

Your mileage may vary along with the opinions of many on the list ... (wink and grin). . .

I just bought a 2TB-WD for 150 USD. Should arrive this week.

i bought a WD "Book" a year ago and I just found out from WD it will not work with Vista or 7! They do not make a driver upgrage for it. I was flabbergasted to say the least. It does make a nice-looking doorstop, though.

I wasn't aware that any of the USB external storage solutions even needed a driver to work unless maybe you're talking about the "One Touch Backup" function.
