You need to overlap two clips. Then do a trannie - yeah?

Zoom in and drop the transition to the "X" overlap. Grob

Is there something odd about my setup? I don't need to overlap clips to add a transition! I can drop them on a clip and they're applied to the start of that clip.

Nope, mine is the same way. I just checked. I placed two clips side-by-side with no overlap and when I dragged a transition to the seam, the cursor changed to a plus sign and I dropped it in and it worked. The funny thing is, it extended the clips rather moving them. So the part of the event used in the transition is a duplicate of the beginning of the event. It also does not crossfade the audio. This is probably NOT the desired effect.

You should get in the habit of overlapping your clips manually.

I do, it's just something I noticed a few days ago when I was playing with VF. Thing is, the lack of an overlap probably doesn't account for the original problem.

This is very interesting . . . . I've just gone back to VF ti check this out:

1. I can have a clip where I can too place a "Barndoor" tranni at the end. Nothing "up" against it. I can see the "Barndoor" tranni on the end of this first clip AND I can play it. The tranni shows the "A" clip vanishing, and nothin taking its place.

2. Now, if I butt up a clip to it the tranni remains, but no effect on "B"

3. If I now "slide" "B" into "A" - an overlap - the tranni dissapears.

4. [Still with me?!]

5. If I butt the "B" up to "A" and THEN apply the "Barndoor" to "A", there is an automatic "overlap" created by the 2 clips - NOT the audio.

6. If I now "separate" the 2 clips - waddya know? - there are two "extended" pieces of video on each clip - but not audio. These "extensions" must be a defualt for applying a tranni to butted-up clips - NO NEED FOR OVERLAP - Me Bad!!!!

So, where does that leaves us - or rather "dcoats" - by the way, where are you up to wioth this - do you have a solution yet?

Maybe you don't have a "default" setup for the "butted-up" clip thingy?

Only a thought . . .

So, going back to the original problem, what happens when you try and drag the transition? You should see a "no entry" sign until you've dragged over a clip on the timeline, at which point it changes to a pair of boxes (frames?) with a plus sign. Do ordinary cross fades work?
