Problem after upgrading from Vegas Pro to Vegas 4.0

I've been using Vegas Pro for 3 years or so.
I have some projects with 24 tracks that play fine in Vegas Pro on my platform.
If I open one of them in Vegas 4 it will not play them smoothly. The audio skips and stops and starts... As if my machine can't handle it.
I can also create a new project and put 24 tracks in it and it has the same problem. I know my platform can handle 24 tracks because Vegas Pro plays them fine.
I hope there is some settings I haven't found yet that will correct this problem. Any help appreciated.

I found VV4 to be less efficient than earlier versions as well.

Cold: could you be more specific? I'm curious because I'm having problems with a significant hesitation before playback begins (almost a full second). Even with very helpful support from a Sony tech for over a week now, we haven't been able to fix this. Its irritating as hell and would certain fall under the category of "less efficient than earlier verions." This doesn't happen in Vegas 3.

Thanks,

My suspicion is that Vegas 4 is "looking" at more variables during playback than Vegas 3. The added funtionallity in vv4 comes with a cpu usage inefficienty as well.
The pause at the begginning of playback your suffering sounds like a playback buffering issue. Do you have your playback buffers set high?
Where I notice the inefficienty most is with projects heavily loaded with pluggins. I can run the same project in vv3 glitch free with the cpu hitting 60% or so, that in vv4 stutters and pops with seemingly similar cpu usage (I kept the cpu usage meter up in both versions of vegas). So what I'm refering to by inefficient is that while the cpu usage seems similar, the cpu load that can be dealt with before playback issues seems much lower in vv4. Wish I had a fix, but I don't.

By the way I'm not using asio as my vintage motu 2408 won't work with them.
