problem importing mpeg-2's (svms 9.0b)

i have sony vegas movie studio 6 and it works fine importing my mpeg-2 video files and doing everything it needs to do. i was looking to upgrade versions, so i downloaded the trial version of platinum 9.0b to test it out...etc. problem is, it won't import my mpeg-2 video files correctly. only the audio portion of the file is imported. when i try to drag and drop the video into the video timeline, it won't go into the timeline....it's like i'm trying to drag and drop an .mp3 into the video section.
i've tried uninstalling and re-installing the program. updated related video drivers (quicktime, windows media player).
i've tried using different mpeg-2 files, and ones i know for sure work in vegas 6.0.

what can i do to make it work?
thanks.

Are these mpeg2 files from a camcorder? Which one? Also, after installing the software (or codecs), always fully reboot your system.

they're converted from .tivo files using the program 'direct show dump'

they work in vegas movie studio 6 just fine. but not in 9.0 platinum.

It's a codec issue. VMS6 used to use the codecs that were on the pc already. VMS9 is much stricter about the codecs it uses, and often will use its own library of codecs. Mpeg2 files created by an obscure (not to say illegal) piece of software like 'direct show dump' are bound to give you problems. Don't expect help from official sony support here, as they won't see it as a bug. Actually, they put this 'disfunctionality' in Vegas 9 on purpose to reduce copyright infringement. Bottomline: it is illegal to burn tivo files on dvd, so Sony won't support it.
Anyhow, your path to follow is this: if possible, use 'direct show dump' to create avi or wmv files, which Vegas can handle much easier, instead of mpeg2 files.

Second path, of course: stick with VMS6.

thanks Ivan.

i'd like to go to 9 because it allows more HQ rendering/output options.

i'd rather not convert to mpeg, then convert to avi/wmv and then edit, and then render the video. i have new core i7 computer, but it still takes a long time to do all that.

There really is no other way. It has been reported on this forum often that editing certain mpeg2 files are buggy. Even if you get the video, you will have problems with audio and video out of sync.
