problem inserting clip at beginning of timeline

This weekend I was trying to insert a one-minute clip at the beginning of the timeline. I had ripple edit enabled, so I thought it would just push everything on the timeline to the right, but instead it "overwrote" the first minute of what was already on the timeline.

So I undid the insertion, then I did "select all" (I had several clips on the timeline with bits cut out of them) and created a group. Then I tried to grab the stuff on the timeline and pull it to the right to make room to drop the clip in, but all that did was to change the duration of the first event.

What should I have done?

Thanks, all.

If you group your events, your audio tracks won't be synchronised if you un-group later.
What I'd do: use the **selection edit tool**, select the whole project (i.e. include all the clips into the "square") , switch back to **normal edit tool** and move the whole project to the right (by simply putting the arrow pointer on any of the clips and moving).

BUT: I'm sure there is another way that's even simpler. A keyboard shortcut.I think I read it a few months ago here on the forum...

Anybody???

How did you do that insert?

I ended up rendering it separately and putting it on the timeline before my main project in my authoring software (DVD Workshop). DVD WS does a bad job of handling multiple clips (there's a short freeze at the end of the clip before going on to the next clip) but since the end of the first clip and the beginning of the main project are fade out/in to/from black, I'm hoping it won't be noticable.

You need to use "paste insert" in the edit menu. Read about it in help under ripple edits. Copy the clip to clipboard - place cursor where you want the clip to go - edit/paste insert - the clip drops in with everything moved over to make room. :)
