Hi all,

I went to render to MPEG2 for a short DVD today and I got the following message: "The Mainconcept MPEG Plug-in was not able to initialize properly. It appears that some modules are be used by a folder other than the install folder. Most likely another third party application has installed Mainconcept modules in the sytem folder. These may conflict with this plug-in.."

I did a search for "Mainconcept" and the only files I found were that ones in Vegas. I have no idea what to change or adjust. I have not installed or downloaded any programs that would use this plug-in. HELP!!!

I rendered my project to an AVI and now need to convert to MPEG2. Are there any programs that your recomend using until I can get this straightened out??

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED...

Now that's a bit scary, I have PI (the version that came for free on a mag cover) but haven't re-installed it following system rebuild. I know heaps of people us it and haven't heard of any issues having it and all the Sony suite on the same system.
Maybe PI now has new dlls or whetever that can cause problems, if that's the case some of us may need to be very wary.

Hello again. Apparently Particle Illusion was not the culprit. Again I am receiving the error message and cannot render to any MPEG format. I searched again for anything w/ Mainconcept in the file name, but nothing shows. Any suggestions... Thanks again..

What version of Vegas are you using? Vegas 4 should workaround this problem by preloading the required MainConcept modules when you start Vegas (you have to run Vegas once and reboot for this to take effect).

Apparently you have installed another application that installed these modules in your Windows system folder. Look at the filenames in your C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG (these are the MPEG plug-in and the MainConcept modules), those that you also find in your Windows system folder are causing the conflict. Premiere is known to cause these conflicts.

Since presumably you've rebooted at least once by now, it sounds like there must be an application that is automatically being run at Windows startup or when you log in that is causing these to be loaded. You'll need to identify what that program is and remove it from the startup sequence.

Perhaps if you boot into safe mode you'll be able to rename the conflicting files in the system folder (e.g., rename mcmpgdec.dll as mcmpgdec_bak.dll, etc.). This might help identify the program causing the trouble. You won't be able to rename them under normal boot/login because they'll be in use. Alternatively you could try logging in as a different user (you may need to create a new account) and rename the files (you'll need to have Admin permissions).

I had this similar problem with Vegas 6 in Oct. 2006. When I choose "Render as...", pressing the "Custom" button in the dialog didn't do anything. When I tried to render an MPEG file using the Default Template, the message said:

"The MainConcept MPEG plug-in was not able to initialize properly. It appears that some modules are being used from a folder other than the install folder.

Most likely anoher third-party application has installed MainConcept modules in the system folder. These may conflict with this plugin. Please contact Sony Customer Support for assistance."

I contacted Sony Customer Support. Three business days later, and still no response. After reading this post, I searched my entire "C" drive for everything with "mc*.dll". Sure enough, I found mcmpgdec.dll in a ULead folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG
I renamed that file to MCMpgDec.dl.bak and everything works again for me in Vegas. Of course, I'm not sure if I broke my ULead applications. There ought to be a way for these two applications to coexist, but I don't know what it is.

Anyway, I hope that helps some else with a similar problem.
