Problem opening an .avi file

When I open a .avi file the sound imports in but the video is lost? If I open it in windows media player, it plays and sounds fine. Any ideas?

These video clips were were originally VHS clips uploaded via a BUZZ board analog/digital device then imported into Video Wave in my old computer. Saved out as .avi file and transfered to the new computer running VV3. The files play on windows media player fine. When I import them into VV3 and drag them onto the storyline, only the music is present. No video. Am I missing a step or what?

Help please? These .avi files open if every product I have including Video Wave, and Power Director but my BRAND NEW VV3 won't open them? ANY help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will help, but it might be worth a shot: Use the free DV file converter you can download from this address
http://www.canopuscorp.com/ppt_dvfileconverter.htm
to convert your files to Microsoft DV (AVI2), and then try to open them in Vegas.

I downloaded the program mentioned above and when I run it, it says it doesn't support the avi file type! I'm going to try using my 60 days of free phone support starting today. Something is amiss.
