Problem rendering projects using AVI media

I have just purchased and installed Sony Movie Studio + DVD Version 4.0. I am a former Pinnacle Studio 8 user and was very frustrated by the tendancy of Pinnacle Studio to crash. I tried the demo of Sony Movie Studio and liked it so much that I bought it.

I have tried to do a few test projects with Sony MS, but I am having a problem rendering projects that use AVI media which I transferred from VHS tape to hard disk using Pinnacle. These are regular AVI files that play fine using Windows Media Player, and even the Sony MS preview window plays them OK. When I render the project for DVD, the video file is renders OK but Sony MS hangs up on rendering the audio. I get an error message that states "the media file could not be read, and the operation has timed out". As a test, I tried rendering a project using a file sourced from my mini-DV camera and it turned out OK. I tried using Windows Movie Maker to save one of the AVI files as a Microsoft DV-AVI file, and then used that in my Sony MS project, but it still hung up. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I tried the obvious and updated to Version 4.0a...that seems to have helped.

Mach5,

The time-out problem was also one that I experienced with Architect 2. The problem was resolved when upgrading to MS6 that includes Architect 3. I read on the Architect forum that A2 had this problem for some.

Sony offers a free upgrade to Movie Studio + DVD 6.0 if you purchased 4.0 within the last 30 days. Just need to fax them a receipt proving purchase date.
