Problem with codec for AVI

xoxsda wrote on 1/13/2012, 4:41 PM
I got a new computer and just installed my Sony Movie Studio HD 11 from my old device onto it. I can import MP4 files just fine, but every time I go to upload an AVI file, I receive an error message that reads: "an error while opening a codec."

It never did this before on my old computer, and I'm using the same files that I did on my old computer, so I was just wondering why this is?

If anyone could help at all, it would mean a lot! I'm kind of freaking out here.

What kind of AVI files are they? Where did they come from? How did you get them onto your drive? There's about 1,001 different types of AVI. Presumably you had the codec necessary for these installed on your old computer but not on the new one yet.

Download a program called mediainfo. It will give you information about the file to help determine what codecc you need to use.

Do not install any codec packs until you know what you need. This can really mess things up.

Milan_ZH the problem you have is that despite its .wmv extension your file is clearly (from the MediaInfo results you have posted) not a .wmv file. Change the .wmv extension to .mpg and you should find the file will work normally in Vegas and elsewhere.
