Problem with inserting a transition

When I load a clip into the timeline, I usually have extra footage at the beginning,
which I highlight to the point I want to keep, then cut out the excess.
The clip moves to the left, as expected.

Now, when I try to add a transition to the beginning of this clip, say a fade-in from
black, VF2.0c will add that transition to the *next* clip in the sequence, not at the
front, where I want it.

The only way I can add a transition to the beginning is to insert a blank time slice to
the front, then drop the transition in. I then double-click the blank time slice I added,
cut it out, now everything's right with the world.

Anyone ever see this anomaly? What am I doing wrong?

If all you want to do is fade-in, point your mouse at the little blue triangle at the top left hand corner of the event (aka clip). Click, hold, and move your mouse to the right. A fade should be created. You can create a fade-out by doing the opposite with the little blue triange at the end of your clip. Right clicking the fade will let you change the fade type (fast, slow, etc).

Also, once you've got one of these fades in place, you can drag & drop any transition onto that faded portion and it will only affect the clip for the duration of the fade.

Thanks! discdude's suggestion created a "placeholder" and Chienworks idea
let me put any transition there I want!
