Problem with preview screen

evm wrote on 7/30/2006, 3:29 PM
I am resizing multiple video clips and placing them on the same screen with each other. I am judging the location of each clip by viewing them in the video preview screen. The problem is, everything looks fine in the preview screen and even during the "Preview in player" playback option everything looks fine with the spacing also. Problem is, when I "render" the file out, the spacing of the clips gets all messed up. What am I doing wrong?

Are you rendering using the same settings defined in your project ?

I just tested it and actually I was rendering in AVI when "previewing in player" and I was rendering in WMV when "rendering the project". My project goes wrong when I render out to wmv. How do I correct this problem because I can not use an AVi file because the file size will be to big.

What is your source material ? This may have to do with the size of the project or perharps the pixel aspect ratio.

The source material is all MPEG-2, 720*480, .9091 NTSC DV pixel apect. These #'s are the same as the project settings also. Would I lose more quality by first rendering the project to an uncompressed AVI and then render that AVI to WMV?

Odds are that your render settings do not match your project settings.
They are two completely different settings and have to be tweaked to match.
For example, even with the 3 Mbps Video WMV render template, it's still 640x480, 30 fps and a pixel aspect of 1.0.
Customize a WMV template, save it and it'll always be available for the next time you need it.

I also noticed that the AVI render setting was 720x480x32. I cannot seem to change the WMV to 720x480x32, I can olny set it to 720x480.
Where do I go from here?

By default WMV always uses a pixel aspect ratio of 1.000 and will completely ignore what your project is set to. However, you can easily override this value.

After you select WMV as your file type, click on the "Custom..." button and then click on the "Video" tab. You will notice the value of 1.000 in the dropdown combo box. Don't bother clicking the dropdown list, as there are no other choices available! Therefore, you must specifically type in the value "0.9091".

I found that if I don't type the leading zero, it will not accept the value (Vegas bug or computer quirk?). Also, it is important to first highlight all the existing text "1.000 (Square)" and either hit delete or type over it to completely irradicate the previous information or the new value will not "stick".

My experience with overlays and lower thirds is that on rendering to WMV, placement is not the same as it appears in an AVI or MPG2 version of the same project.

Very frustrating, especially when you've spent hours carefully lining elements up only to find they are all over the place in the WMV version.

My workround is to render to AVI first and then produce the WMV from that version.
