Problem with still images from timeline.

I had done this with version 4.0c, but something has changed and I'm not sure what. I did a search and followed the best recommendations I could find, however the problem I am having is that I can get the clip as far as the clipboard, but it won't paste into Photoshop or any other paint program. "Paste" is greyed out.

I then tried Capture to take the still shots right off the camera as described in JetDv's Tips and Tricks #5. After saving 26 shots ( after two hours of scanning the videos), none of them were valid *.bmp files. I had unchecked Save as Jpeg. Four different paint programs and none recognized them as valid picture files.

I did this the first way a few months ago when I had Vegas 4.0c. Not sure if the upgrade changed something or not. The images were horrible, but they worked. I used Resolution "Best", etc etc etc as described by several posters when I searched so I know it's not that. Maybe some other unintuitive button I changed which I unintuitively changed for some other intuitive reason.

I just can't seem to intuitively figure this one out. Just kidding.

Thanks as always for the help,

John

First of all, if you turn OFF saving as JPG, it saves as PNG - not BMP.

Second, if you can save a picture, you should also be able to copy to clipboard. Once on the clipboard, you have to create a NEW blank picture in your paint program (i.e. Photoshop) and then paste into that new blank picture.

Photoshop SHOULD be able to open the PNG files just fine.

Thanks for the reply Ed,
I turned off Save as Jpeg when I used VidCap 4.0d and it automatically saved them all as Bitmap files which could not be opened in any paint program including Photoshop because they were invalid picture files.

As far as "paste" goes, it wasn't available in any of the four paint programs I have. My guess is that the file copied to the clipboard from the timeline was also an invalid file, therefore the paint programs won't think there is a picture file to paste. Thus the greyed out "paste" function. This worked for me with Vidcap 4.0c. Same setup.....no change.

For what its worth...

As a first step I always bring the media bin up so I can see Vegas copying the file. If successful it shows the thumbnail. For some reason even on my system which is a fast 3.2 Ghz P4 there is a slight pause maybe a couple seconds before the thumbnail shows up. I just tried and I can open JPG's, or PNG's generated by Vegas in Photoshop. Just so I can find them quickly, I always save to the Desktop. Shouldn't matter, but who knows.

From the past posts I searched, here is what I did:

For copying to clipboard:
1. Change preview window to Best(Full).
2. Change Pixel Aspect Ratio from 0.9091 to 1.0000
3. Change event properties from 0.9091 to 1.0000
4. Change field order to "None"
5. Find frame to copy on timeline
6. Copy frame to clipboard
7. Open Photoshop or other paint program
8. Paste is greyed out

For Capture attempt:

1. Open Vidcapture 4.0d
2. Under Capture unchecked "Save captured stills as Jpeg" in options
3. Also checked "Deinterlace image when capturing stills"
4. In Preview changed Pixel Aspect Ratio to 1.0000 (multimedia)
5. Locate frame using camera
6. Click Capture Image
7. Image goes directly into Media Pool as a Bitmap file.
8. None of the bitmap files with proper file extensions and icons are able to be opened by any paint program on three different computers because files are invalid.
9. In the Media Pool they are listed as stills. You can also see the image (which looks correct). Right clicking on them and looking at Properties reveals Video Format: 327x240x32, uncompressed (which is I guess what multimedia resolution is).

PS: OK I just tried the following:
1. Set properties at "Default".
2. Used Save Snapshot to File first as a .jpeg, then as a .png file and both opened in Photoshop.
3. Copied the same clips to the clipboard and "paste" was greyed out in Photoshop and also in another program.
