Problem with video capture "SONY cam" to HP PC

We have got a problem with video capture between our SONY DCR PC5E and our HP laptop with win2000.
It worked nice the first weeks after installing Video factory but then suddenly we got some problem.
The problem is that Video factory says "unknown resolution" and then the whole PC hang up within about 30 sek.
We know that the camera is ok but what to do with the problem? Are there any configuration in Video factory or is it the configuration on the PC?

Have you or others added or removed any s/w during the same time? All I know is there isn't a special option for particular cammy. As far as I know VF uses the standard MS Camcorder device for Capture and PTT. Stuagr - during what process does it hang? Are you using any external hard drives for the video work? Have you got the latest version of DirecX from MS? Do you think you have "filled" up your hd - Windows needs a large piece of the action to do its own thing. What space have you left on your hd? Try and think of what progressive fucntions could have/are affecting your system. Have you had any crashes lately? Have you defragged or scan disked the system lately? Have "others" had access to your system lately? Do you know if anything untoward happened?

Try, if possible, to do the same thing on another computer. You'll have to do it without VF, but this way you could check out the fidelity of the Sony - yes?

Oh yes - interrogate the File/Folder management of the capture/PTT function - yes? Make sure the Folder/s are active. I've had this as problem before! I had to "force" back the folders I wanted.

Can you check your cabling and ports of the DV in/out - yes? Something has changed from the begining. Try and re-trace your past week. As you say, the system has worked - something has changed. Do you have some antivirus s/w. If you don't you may, MAY have a virus if you have either accessed the internet or had someone innocently using the laptop with an infected disk - yes? If you do have a/v s/w then this can cause Capture issues. But, again if you haven't changed this I can't see how this would affect something that you have been happy with - yes?

Others will jump in and have a go here.... The other thing is that you might want to view any Sony DV forums for similar issues.

Sorry I can't be of any further help. Canon XM2 user here sooooo.... good luck!

However, if you've got any feedback about 120gb MAXTOR firewire drives "falling-over" I'd be much obliged!!!!
