Problems after upgrading to Windows XP Pro

I just upgraded my computer to Windows XP Pro SP2. I did a complete clean install of the software. Previously, I was using Windows 2000 Pro.

Now when I try to run Vegas 5, I can not get it to load. It just sits there at the load screen and does not go any further than that. I can not afford to upgrade to a newer version of Vegas, and would prefer not to go back to Win 2K. My old version of Movie Studio 4 loads and runs just fine.

I tried the following, but Vegas 5 still will not run for me:
1) Set the application to run in Windows 2000 compatible mode
2) Disable Windows Firewall
3) Disable Norton Anti-virus

My PC is an Intel P4 (Intel chipset on mainboard), 512MByte PC2700 RAM (soon to be 1GByte), ATI 9000 Pro 256 MByte Video Card, multiple hard drives, etc.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

All drivers, updates, etc. are up-to-date.

You did a format of the disk and a complete fresh install? If so there is no reason why Vegas 5 wouldn't run. If you downloaded the software from Sony, try downloading it again and doing another install.

Is it at all possible that you will need NEW activation codes from SONY? Re-formatting, and a clean install? How would SONY keep track of your software? However, it doesn't appear, from what you haven't said, as if you have been confronted with a need to "Phone-Home" - so maybe I'm talking rubbish?

As far as SONY is concerned, re-formatting is like starting anew with a new PC . . . I'm trying to remember that in this instance new codes or the OLD codes are required . . But again, and if I am correct, I don't understand why you weren't asked to use your activation codes?

Remember that Win2k keeps all kind of secret files on all of your hard drives and they all must be double zeroed. On downloads it will sometimes select another hardrive for updates and storage of key data items involved in the boot process.

I had the same symptoms more than once myself. I can't remember if it was v5 or v6, but I had to install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 to resolve. With .NET 2.0 now a standard update on XP, you might want to ensure you also got .NET 1.1. I could be wrong as my memory of v5 is fuzzy. It may have only been V6 with media manager that had this problem....

Probably not much help, but I have used V3, V4, 5, 6 and now 7c on XP Pro without a problem, so for what it's worth - it will work.
