Problems Rendering HDV to HD Uncompressed

Gerard Elmore wrote on 10/12/2005, 7:17 PM
Help!

I'm desperately trying to export my HDV project to HD uncompressed as the only guy in town who can print to HDCAM runs on a MAC and can't read any of the PC files that Vegas renders as.

I have a 3.0GHZ pentium 4, 1.5 gig of ram and everytime I try to render out either uncompressed or as a HDV codec Vegas crashes. The project is 23.976 (progressive) and a little bit of effects added on the layers. I also tried on a 3.6 GHZ pentium 4 machine and that also failed as well. It actually went further but it was filled with glitches everywhere.

I edited with the native m2t files but I also converted all my source files to CIneform avi's. Both methods failed to export.

I need to turn in my master to the film festival next week as we are screening very soon and I'm beginning to run out of ideas as to how to get my project off my computer.

What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I can do to get this project exported out of Vegas? Anyone have the same problems or is my computer too slow?

Please, does anyone know what I can do?

Thanks,

Gerard.

This is with the latest build of Vegas 6c?

With all builds...I keep uninstalling and installing a and version c.

Version c seems to crash even for my Standard Def version while version a is rock solid for a SD file. I don't understand why but lucky I got something out.

You might try exporting as a quicktime TGA. I haven't tried this yet with HD in V6c, but it has worked fine in the past for other projects. If you don't have a fast system, it may not have the resources that uncompressed demands for rendering. You have enough hard drive space?

Thanks Doug,

I actually have it hooked up to a Raid with a ton of storage space right now and rendering it out as a still image sequence which some of my friends suggested...seems to be working fine so far.

If it crashes, I'll try the quicktime TGA.

Thanks again,

Gerard.

I've done this once on just a small segment just to see how much hard disk space I could use up and nothing crashed. One possible problem though could be CPU overheating.

In a fix you might load your Vegas and your raw m2t files on to the mac with your veg file and have the mac guy render on his own machine.

Bob's your uncle! Overheating is at least the most likely cause of this.

Are your machines home made, or have they had several 10K or 15K drives added?

First fix would be to remove the CPU cooler, remove the Intel gunk which is poor quality, and replace it with Arctic Silver paste which helps drop the CPU temperature substantially.

Next level would be to do the above plus get a Zalman CPU cooler or equivalent (search previous posts here for starters).

Thanks for the info.

Looks like the image sequence is working...it's rendering .png's which aren't actually what I would like but the image is holding up pretty nicely. It hasn't crashed yet and still going...the thing is that it renders extremely slow. About 10 seconds an hour...lucky I only did a short.

I'd be really looking into heat problems. Simple test, open the case and blow a normal fan at the mobo.
Rendering to png probably means what's holding things up is the sheer amount of data being written, not the CPU, hence the CPU doesn't get as hot. Rendering to other formats may mean more CPU load than disk load hence the CPU cooks.

Good idea.

I'll try that test and see what happens...although we did have an AC fully blasting two inches away from the computer with the case open but not directly on the motherboard...so maybe the fan idea may work.

It's half way rendered and still going so for the time being I'll wait but will defintely look into it.

Thanks,

Gerard.

Needless to say it's alos a good idea to have Task Manager running at the same time to see what else might be going on like memory leaks causing apps to run out of memory.
RAM problems are the second thing to look for but they're a bit harder to diagnose. One of my clients has a brand new G5 and he's had weeks of drama trying to get it to PTT reliably, in the end it was a RAM problem.
