problems since installing new hard drive

i was running the latest version of vegas video with absolutely no problems.

several days ago, i added a Western Digital 80 gig hard drive (IDE with 8 megs cache) to my system as well as a promise ide ata-100 controller card. prior to this, i had been capturing video and editing on 3 9gig scsi drives.

now, whenever i capture video (whether to the new IDE drive, or the existing SCSI drives) one of two things happens;

1) sound is extremely choppy and staticy...
2) video plays fine, audio seems fine, then at somepoint along the way, the captured video seems to freeze and turns into random colour blocks on my screen....video playback on the camera is fine however.

this happens regardless of whether i try to capture to the existing scsi drivs, or the new ide drive....no changes to the system have been amde other than outlined above....

any ideas/suggestion are welcome on how to go about fixing this.

cheers

Sure sounds like an IRQ address space problem. I bet your new IDE pci card latched onto the same IRQ that your OHCI/firewire is using. Might also be a power issue with all those HDs in your case. How many Watts does your power supply output ?

How does one go about checking to see either of the above?

Thanks

Also, I'm wondering what your other system specifications are. You shouldn't have to install a controller card on any relatively new system, which should support the ATA specs.ATA33 drives work just as fast as ATA 100 ones for video, which outputs data as a relatively slow steady stream. The ATA 33/66/100 designations apply to burst speed, which isn't all that important in this regard. Try removing your controller card, and slaving your new drive to the primary IDE channel. Your power supply ratings should be somewhere on the power supply. Post exactly what kinds of hardware you have in your machine, eg; # & type of drives, amount of ram, type/s of processor/s, sound card, etc.

One place to check IRQ's is go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Info/Hardware resources/IRQ's.
May also click on Coflicts/Sharing, if there is more than 2 on an IRQ it will show up there too.

it appears that the following is happening:

IRQ 16 is being shared by my matrox g400 video card and my promise ultra100TX2 ide controller card (the one i just bought)

IRQ 19 is being shared by my USB host controller (on the motherboard), the Adaptec SCSI controller (on the motherboard) and the VIA OHCI compliant 1394 host controller (PCI card).

I am going to remove the Ultra100 ata controller card if it isn't needed...I guess I got conned into buying something that I didn't need to buy!!!

Will report back if that appears to fix anything. Cheers

Oh, also, I have a 300w power supply that is being used by
3 9 gig scsi drives
1 ide drive
1 scsi cd-rom
1 scsi cd-rw
1 scsi tape backup unit

will try and remove power from one of the (now un-needed) scsi drives to see if that does anything

cheers

Word of advice. Try one thing at a time to narrow it down. First remove the new controller card and attach the new drive to the motherboard as previously suggested. Then try it again. Then if that doesn't work, try the next thing. It's time consuming, but at least you have a better clue as to what the problem may be so that you'll know what's happening inside your PC.
