Problems with audio codecs

I have a project for which file size is very important, and thus I can't use uncompressed PCM audio. I need a good quality (for 44,100, 16, stereo) but small size format to go with the DivX video. Problem is that I don't seem to have many choices (since I need to use the Render As > Avi > Audio formats available), which is to say that the only option seems to be Lame MP3 or Mpeg 1 Layer 3 (which are roughly the same thing) format. However, for some reason, whenever I choose a Lame codec to render, Vegas (4.0e) gives an error message ('an error occured while opening a codec') and halts. So at this point I'm stuck. I don't know why Lame doesn't work with Vegas (works fine from other programs), and there doesn't seem to be any other option available. Is there some other way (maybe by installing some other audio codec) to do this without having to choose a different video format (i.e. keep it DivX avi) that anyone can think of? Any help would be appreciated...

Why can't you encode your audio using the "mp3" option in Vegas? Anyway, I always thought "mp3" is just a shorthand for "MPEG1, layer 3." Are you sure they're different?

If I encoded the audio as Render As> mp3, then I would get an mp3 file. But I need an avi file with (embedded) mp3 audio. I might be missing something (I'm new to Vegas) but as far as I know, the only way to control the audio part of an avi render without having to subesquently reencode it (and thus lessen to quality) is by using the audio pannel in the Render As> Avi template.

As for mp3 being 'MPEG1, Layer 3', you are right, they are theoretically the same thing, in that mp3 is short for MPEG Layer 3. However, in this case we are talking particular implementations of mp3 compression. As far as I can tell, Lame has two such implementations:, 'Lame MP3 ' which is their original algorithm, and 'MPEG1, Layer 3', which is basically a variant of the Fraunhoffer IIS compression method (and a replacement for it). Thus, the result in both cases is an 'mp3', but the compression method, and thus the final result is different.

Anyway, I'm still quite puzzled by this whole thing. I have no idea why Lame doesn't work in Vegas, and still haven't found any alternatives. How do you all render avi files? You just use uncompressed PCM all the time?

P.S. I don't understand why the audio codec section in the avi render template is limited to certain codecs. For example, there is a separate 'Render As OGG' option, but no OGG in the avi render audio pannel. It seems to me that Vegas is rather limited by having to rely on its own file I/O templates, which are not that many. It would be very good if Sony either released more output plug-ins (such as OGM, 3ivX, or even Quicktime 6), or otherwise make use of a more flexible architecture so that these could be easily implemented by third-party dev/users.

Hi,
I'm not sure if you'll find this helpful 3 months after you're original post but nonetheless - one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I too was having trouble with this and what i wound up doing was purchasing Dr. Divx to render my final files. I would edit in Vegas, then render an uncompressed .avi (usually around 2 gigs for every minute). then in Dr. Divx. This works well... as long as you won't need to import these final Divx .avi files back into Vegas because you'll run into syncing problems. there's a solution for this, actually so it wouldn't be the end of the world but it would be more time, energy and a few more days off your life.

hehe.. it's not so bad.

hope that helps.

Solution for the sync problem?! Please do share. Vegas has been terrible with divx/xvid files for me. To or from, the sync gets completely messed up. Moreover, half the time vegas can't get the audio. It says it sees the audio as mp3, but cannot determine attributes so it won't use it. Drives me nuts to see such an otherwise great program fail so bad compared to freeware apps. Also, the 2 gig .wav file limit. What is that? I have no other programs that care if a wav is over 2 gigs.

Sorry for the quick rant, any wisdom you have in this area would be handy.
