Problems with DVC100 and Vegas for external monitoring

I have the Canopus DVC100 connected to a JVC monitor and 20" TV it works great. Often though Vegas doesn't recognize it and gives me "Device unavailable". Is there a "special" sequence for starting everything? Vegas then Canopus, or Canopus then Vegas. If I disconnect the firewire cable and plug it in again then XP sees it and gives me the option to associate with Vegas. There has to be a better way. I would like to have the convertor plugged in and available whenever I'm running Vegas. Any help would be appreciated.

Best to have it on and connected when you start Vegas I find. I think the issues have something to do with firewire being a multidrop bus. USB devices never seem to have these problems but they're point to point devices.
