Problems with Playback

Im sure this is something simple. I have created about a 6 min file, using simple .avi files that I created with my sony digitial camera. Basically there just small clips joined together with simple transistions. When I put it together it looks great on the preview window in the product.

But when I try and render it or preview it in WMP or Quicktime it skips and jumps all over and is out of sync. I am assuming this is a codec issue or my config. But is there some kind of FAQ that outlines what my system needs. I have created DVD's and Home videos of these clips in Roxio in the past. But I thought I would start learning more. But it seems to be even more confusing to me. Any help would be great! I can supply more info if needed.

Thanks
Bryan

If you are rendering uncompressed and your cpu is fairly slow it will stutter. What are your render settings.

I am rendering .avi Video for Windows. Using NTSC DV, then checking Best quality under custom. I tried a sample render as a .mov and that works no stuttering, but it is not very good quality. What should the settings be. My cpu is slow, besides getting a knew processor is there anything else I could do?

my cpu is slow

That is likely the problem then. What CPU do you have?

Is it capable of playing back an NTSC DV video stream (doesn't seem like it)?

If you are not seeing any "stuttering" when using a format like .mov that is likely because that is a much lower bit-rate and therefore does not tax your cpu so much.

So... how do you want to view this video in the end? Is it just on your PC? If so then you just need to render to a reasonable quality format that will play on your PC. I would recommend Windows Media Video 9 - at a bit-rate of something like 512Kbps or 1Mbps. Just look for the appropriate template when you do a file-render-as

My goal here is to burn this video with some other pictures onto a DVD. I will do this with Roxio DVD builder. I have used it in the past and it is easy and simple. I drop all of the pictures, change transitions add music, add this one cool video I did on Vegas as a different chapter, then burn the DVD and give as a gift. Its about a 7 minute climbing video, but they do not have a PC, just DVD player.

Ok, your solution worked. Thank you very much! I have one additional question. It may sound stupid, though, so I apologize. If I render this video in two manners. One, in a quality I can view. The second in DVD quality. When I burn this to a DVD, will the better quality one still display on a DVD properly, despite stuttering on my computer?

Im basically asking if I can preview it in a lesser quality, then save it in best quality NTSC DV, then burn to DVD and it should still play nicely?

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated!!!

The fact your PC cannot play the DVD / DV quality files smoothly should not impair your ability to create a DVD that plays just fine in a DVD player (or other PC that is better equipped). The files you render for the DVD side (that NTSC DV format) will render just fine to MPEG2 using Roxio.

And... out of interest... how fast is your CPU?

Its a pentium III, Im not sure of the speed. I no longer have internet, as of the day after I put that post on, thank for the quick reply, sorry I could not respond sooner and with better info. Right now, I did everything listed above and I have some great videos, but when I render them, I watch the preview screen view and render each frame, but the playlength is stuck at 4 minutes and 42 seconds, all of the renderings I do, have that problem. My files are anywhere from 5-11 minutes long, any tips, Im in a bind and only have a few days to fix this, any suggestions would be very helpful!
