Program Crash

I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. I have used it to edit and upload a video from my GoPro to YouTube around 30 mins long. I decided to do the same with video from my Panasonic camera.
I converted it to Medium Resolution, WMV3 format (I had to use Unsoft converter, as the Panasonic one is not compatable with Windows 7. I then opened the files in Vegas, having opened about 10 assorted clips, 8 Mins in, the next clip did not show the thumbnail, trying to drag it in the timeline, it showed the no entry symbol, then crashed. I tried the same again having converted to Low Resolution, this time I did get a bit more, about 15mins.
I decided this was due to memory problems, I would add my computer is high spec with 8 gig ram,
I then decided to try Windows Movie Maker, just to see how this performed.
I was shocked, It took clip after clip, and ones in the higher resolution. I ran out of clips at 30mins.
So why will Vegas not take the same amount.
