A.dar file is the DVDA Project.

Are you saying that when you open DVDA and try to open a previous project, it won't work?

for ex., when i click on a VMS project file it automatically opens VMS and the project. but when i click the dar dvda file instead of likewise opening dvda it gives the "windows can't open this file" message. when i used to save dvda projects they would save as a file with a recognizable dvda icon instead of just a generic dar file.

Okay. I see what you mean. Does the dar file have an ICON or is it the generic windows icon?

If it has the generic Windows icon, you have lost the Windows association. You can fix that within windows by reassociating the file with the exe file.

yeah, it's the generic looking windows icon

reassociate? could you be a little more "step by step". not quite following. also, why would there suddenly be this disassociation between windows & dvda?

Which version of Windows?

Search Windows help for "File Association", or try right-clicking on the DAR file and select "open with".

xp. but how can i get my dvda proj file to save with the dvda icon like it used to?

Open any folder, it doesn't matter which one.

Click on Tools

Click on File Types

Scroll until you DAR

Then where it says OPEN WITH, change that to DVDA

Sometimes Windows just does that stuff. It is SOFTware.

I find it a little more straightforward to right-mouse-button click on the misbehaving icon and choose "open with", then browse to the program, select it, and choose "always open files of this type with this choice" or whatever your version of Windows says.

with my wifes help i got the jist of what you were both saying. what we did was:

right click on the dvda desktop shortcut icon. under the "shortcut" tab next to "target" we followed the path to where the program was: C:\Program Files\Sony\DVD Architect Studio 4.5\dvdarchst45.exe"

then i went back to the dar file and right clicked it and clicked "open w/". dvda was not showing on the list so i clicked browse and, bearing in mind the path, found dvda, clicked it and checked the box "always open this type of file with this program". my dar icon then changed to the blue dvda icon. yay!

so pathetically simple. thanks for your help guys! i am slow.
