Project Media Preview mode not showing video

Using 8.1 Pro 64bit ver build 171. for first time, always used 32bit ver in the past.
Re-installed after installing new memory and SDD for my main C; drive. All seemed to be working ok on a project I'm working on, until I tried previewing some content in the Project media tab or the Explorer tab. If I place the media on the timeline everything works ok. But if I haven't yet placed media (video clip) on the timeline when I play it or auto preview a clip, the audio plays but not video. If I place a clip on the timeline, then remove it, then the clip will play with video in the preview mode in the Project media or Explorer tab area.

Any idea what gives?

The general feeling on 8.1 64 bit was negative on these boards. Lots of weird things happened. I found it useable in my own case. I really can't remember all the issues. Your issue sounds related to codec and particular media. You might try running it in comparability mode for Vista or XP.

8.0c 32 bit is very solid. Many here still using it . Why not use that?

Normally, when audio plays but not video it's a sign that you don't have the video codec installed (but you do have an audio codec that can play the media's audio).

Given what you're describing, it sounds like Vegas is somehow matching a codec to your file after it hits the timeline but not before, which seems odd.
