Project Properties

Hi,

No matter my settings for the Project Properties or what type of video footage I Import in (Stock footage or off MiniDV) the video itself never fills the frame. looking at the preview window there is a small black border surrounding the video. The top and bottom are more shallow that the sides.

I have tried using different settings (template pulldown menu) but nothing seems to fix the problem. I can see the came boarder in the event / pan crop window as well. I have also tried using all the templates located in its own pulldown menu but am still unable to completely fill the frame.

I can manually adjust the frame in the event pan crop window to fix but this is terribly aggravating.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

What are the properties of the footage you are importing?
(IE: 720x480 NTSC DV)
Does your camera have the ability to do Anamorphic recording?
Are you recording 16X9 footage?

The stock footage is Pal (VideoTraxx from Digital Juice)

The MiniDV footage off the camera is standard 720x480 NTSC DV

The strange thing is, Vegas treats them both the same with respect to the boarder.

If you set Vegas' project properties to NTSC DV 720x480 and import Mini DV from the camcorder then Vegas will display it exactly the way the camera recorded it, with no added borders whatsoever. If you see black borders that's because the camera put them there.

What happens with the PAL material if you set Vegas' properties to PAL DV?

The stock footage is the same as the miniDV footage.

I tried all the Pal settings, with the exception of the wide screen format there was virtually no noticeable difference.

I am very confused.

Start by narrowing down the problem. Capture NTSC DV footage from tape over firewire and put it into a project based on the NTSC DV template. That should fill the screen top to bottom. 99% of the time it'll fill the frame laft to right too (however our higher end DSR 500 actually leaves a black edge on the left and right-something you shouldn't see on a newer camera)

Just work on getting that right first.

You said the stock footage is pal, if the MiniDV is NTSC, then they are different resolutions.

Have you tried the MATCH PROJECT PROPERTIES to footage icon?

If I Right click | Properties | media tab the frame rate shows 29.970 (NTSC). I read some where at the Digital Juice web site their VideoTraxx footage was PAL. But according to this I actually have NTSC.

The attributes shows the stock footage as 720x486x32

Is this the correct way to verify a Tracks properties?

You're verifying the media clip's properties and Vegas is telling you that this clip is in NTSC "Standard" dimensions and not NTSC DV. What Vegas calls standard is 486 PX high while DV is 480 high. So if your project is using the NTSC DV settings then Vegas will resample (resize) the digital juice footage to fit. You should see black on the left and right for that footage.

What about the NTSC DV footage from the camera? You say it also has black at the top and bottom? Or is that only after trying to adjust a track to make the digital juice footage fit?
