Project Settings Export/Import

Howdy,

It's pretty clear now that it's very easy to switch project settings on VMS and just about anything will work. But I still have a few questions.

Let's say I have a project that I've started in HD 1080 60i.

What field order should I use if I'm importing from DV camera which uses MiniDV tape? Do I need to worry about this when I use Sony Video Capture?

How about when I make a DVD? Do I need to worry about field order?

Thanks,

BT

Since HDV uses Upper Field First interlacing and AVIs use Lower Field First, you may see some interlace "trembling" when you output your video -- though Vegas does a very good job of blending these kinds of frame issues.

But the bigger question is -- why would you set up a project for 1920x1080 or even 1440x1080 and then put 720x480 video into it?

If you output a hi-def video from this project, your video will just look fuzzy and pixelated. And, if you're going to output a standard def video from it, why set your project up for hi-def?

Howdy,

There's a good chance that I could end up combining footage from several different sources, both HD and standard.

Any suggestions?

So you're saying that 720x480 uses lower field first?

Thanks,

BT

I generally don't recommend combining vastly different formats in the same project.

But, as I said, Vegas does a very good job of blending the differences. So it may be worth a test drive: Combine a whole variety of media clips in a short project and output a DVD. If you're happy with how the results look on your TV, you'll know you're good to go.

Good idea!

Sorry to jump in, but this is pretty much a non-discussion.

Vegas gets it right.

In some very rare instances, field order may be misreported by the media source flags (not Vegas). If this happens, you will know it instantly. This doesn't take any experience to spot, and it can be changed in media properties if necessary (I actually had to do this once in the last ten years). If the render looks OK, it is OK. OK?

With mixed media, you can set your project properties to match the majority of the source media, or to the output properties. It makes absolutely no difference to Vegas wrt field order..

Best of luck.

Howdy,

Sorry to respond late. I've never figured out how to get this forum to notify me automatically if someone makes a post.

Thanks for the information on project properties. Looks like I can quit worrying and that's great!

Not your fault. Unlike some other forum software this forum can not do that notification. You have to manually come back and check to see if anyone replied to your post.
