PromoVideo for Your Crits

((Can someone direct me how to imbed a direct link? I see it done all the time, but all I know how to do is post the URL. Thanks))
Submitted for all your constructive criticism, I offer the following:
http://www.matthewroddy.com/videospots/fhm-promo_1m.mov
It's designed to be a lead-in from the FHM web site to the Flea-Circus web site, where folk can learn more about creating their own flea circus.
NOTE: the flea-circus.com site that this promo video mentions is a site that is designed to sell a product. This message and requests for comments is in no way trying to sell any product.
;-) Just want to be clear that all I'm looking for is comments on the vid, editing, color, content, pace, etc. etc.

Comments

I enjoyed it, the pacing is good. The shot with the gorilla is somewhat disconcerting, as it doesn't fit with the rest of the scenes, and purely from a shooter's point of view, I'd have liked a little more movement with the cam or using pan/zoom. The two handheld shots that I could see were very nice in the midst of all the 'pod shots.
The intro is very well put together with the look of old film.
With a voiceover, this would be hilarious.

Cheinworks, Thanks for the How-To. No comments on the vid?
Spot; a VO, really? I'll give that some serious thought!! We were going for that old "silent movie" look. But I'll see how it sounds with a VO. As for the BEAR shot (gorilla...HA!), it's all part of the intrigue. It's actually part of the full video and everyone loved the bear, so I HAD to throw him for a cameo on the promo. As for the "more movement," point taken. I appreciate it. I'll do more in the next vid.

The only reason for the V/O is that there is no build nor change in the music. With no V/O, the next thing I'd be looking at is throwing some stingers in there, like when the fleas are in the bottle, you might add some air movement, or when they're jumping, maybe a slide whistle or other cartoonish sound laid to the right or left of the background music. You don't NEED a V/O, but it would spice it up a bit.
As for the bear...while it probably makes sense to those who know the full vid, as someone who hasn't, it just sorta came out of nowhere and didn't feel like it fit. Maybe consider using a widener on the background music, and placing the stingers inside the wider stereo field with some panning to keep the ear interested along with the eye.

Wow... No comments on the vid except from Master Spot.
Guess I need to make it more controvercial ;-)
Sir Spot, what do you mean, "using a didener on the background music?" I'm still very much a novice when it comes to audio sweetening. What I imagined when you said that would be to pan music track out left and right (making it overall quiter??) and putting SFX panned dead center???
Point taken about the bear. Thanks.

A widener like what WAVES or iZotope offer. Try the iZotope demo, you'll figure it out very, very quickly if you've got reasonably good monitors. I listened to yours on both my Gennies and my crapola Kensingtons.
You might also layer in the sound of scratchy record on the music during the "old film" part to give it some reality/depth, and separation from the newer parts. scratchy record sounds are available from lots of sound libes.

I thought it was great!

I can't be any more constructive than that (which is a good thing I guess). I particularly liked how the ending musical flourish was nicely synched to the action of the perfesser.

Good job.

I'd like to know what you used to do the text at the end. Did you do it in Vegas?
TIA,
Randy

funny stuff, would have liked to know what the nuty professor was saying though, first part with the slates was very nice and was telling a story, then the professor came in and was telling us something, but what ? maybe open his audio up.
Anyway , was a well done spot in my opinion.

DSE, I'll definately look into the old vinyl sound. I have IZtope's Vinyl, so that should be fun.
Pierre, Thanks very much.
Randy, it's no trick really. Well, unless you consider using Boris RED a trick. Ok, maybe it is. No way I could be clever enough to do that effect in Vegas. I mean, sure, it could be done, but I'm not patient enough. It's just a TypeOn effect in Boris. A bit of rendering, but hey, it looks nice.
winrock, please feel free to visit flea-circus.com and see the 10 min video. I'd value your opinion on that too. That vid doesn't try to sell anything, it's just a sort of info kind of gag. Ultimately, the Professor would like you to purchase the info on the web page, but the video doesn't take that bend at all. Glad you wanted to know what he's saying, though. That means you were at least a little intrigued. But I understand what you're saying; maybe I could produce a little more intrigue by hearing him a little. Sure would make it tough to cut on the beat, though. Since this video is only up for a little time in the FHM web site (and mag), I won't likely recut the piece (only a month or two run), but I'll definately keep these comments in mind for future projects. Very valuable info.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Excuse my ignorance (I went to their web site, but I'm still not clear). Does the iZotope Vinyl work in Vegas or as a stand alone?

I noticed that when they ask What applications do you use? they still refer to "Sonic Foundry" Acid, Vegas, and Sound Forge. <sigh> Those were the days!

Vinyl works in vegas . ( As a plugin )

Jon

The demos are worth a spin too. 10 days of full version then cuts back to inserting gaps of silence . ( Ozone 3 , Spectron , Trash )
