A number of us do it all the time. In fact, you can also stream to the PS3 which means you can even see it in HD, if you needed to without burning to any disc.

There's no reason to burn any DVD. The way to do it is to run a UPnP server (e.g. TwonkyMedia is the best), and then serve the video files from your PC to your PS3. While browsing the media files from the PS3, you can either stream them, or copy them to the PS3's hard drive. Prefer to have an ethernet connection to your router for both PC and PS3, and not just wifi.

Alternatively, you can just write the MP4 files on SDHC cards or CF cards, much more manageable than DVDs.
