PTT/bs - Gone back to basics - A working solution . .

Having read all your suggestions, listened to colleagues of mine using Prem and other NLEs, listened to wedding videographers and posting emails in many places, what comes out vey loud and clear is the "Wipe Clean" and "Start All Projects with Clean Drive" approach to projects.

I gave this a go this morning. I clear off everything from one of my 120gb drives - the I: drive, and d'yer know what? It works. The flow of DV is steady and the red indicaztor light now remains on, like it has never done before. I've dedicated one whole drive solely to the final rendered file - purely for PTTing. IT WORKS! - I may change my work flow and substitute my F: 60gb for this PTT drive and bring the other 2 x 120 gb up to F and G. I think I'll then squeeze in the 80gb to postion H: . Lots to play with here.

Yes, I know defragging should have the same effect. Done that been there - not for me. I can also hear others saying, " You should be able to do this even IF your hard disc is thrashing about searching for the bit 'n pieces of a DV-AVI file" - Well, maybe it should. I've throw in the towel on this search for "Nirvana" - I've got a scenario that at present works. The other thing is that I've been able to do is now "hot-plug" my Canon. So that's the theory of the drivers out of the window. The laptop is docked.

Honest, lads and lassies, I really do think this is it. It may not be PC-pc [politically correct!] in saying this, but having a dedicated PTT render drive for that final PTT file will be my choice for the coming few days - until it goes South again - here's hoping it don't.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - and Grob, laptops may not have the processor speed we would like to think they have - yeah? Maybe there is something awry with our set-ups. Okay. Have a separate PTT drive will allow us to "live with it" - yeah?

Grazie

Grazie, good to see you've got a solution that works for you.
I've read through your "adventures" and I tip my hat to you. Someone else might have thrown in the towel long ago.

Story of my life really! - Don't know when to give up - Well, there are Sundays . .

But thanks for your best wishes.

"Let IT BE KNOWN - that this is a definate FIX. AND IT IS VERY BASIC TOO!!!"

Phewwwww . . .

This is what I do I have a 80 gig hd that I use for nothing but video capture and render. The VV program is on my other drive. Also after every project I defrag the 80 gig it only takes about 10 minutes and I start out clean for each new project.

Ditto here.

Oh no. Now I have to think again -- I hate that.

Hmmmm. I've got a "C" with operating system and VV3 (where's my 4?) on it, and a 120GB "E" (video only) with DV captures, final renders, music tracks, stills, and the like. I can only copy rendered .avi from "E" to "C" and successfully PTT from there (mostly, still the odd audio hiccup).

Both discs defragged regurlarly, especially before PTT. Everything disabled I can find (except CD queries?). I'm also of the opinion that drivers and 1394 compliance are not my issues. The only thing I have left to try is to switch my camcorder from the integral 1394 to the Belkin PCMCIA 1394 adaptor and PTT out from "C" through there instead. "E" to Belkin 1394 to "C" back out to Belkin 1394 to Camcorder fails miserably. Read a comment that the single PCMCIA may be overwhelmed with that much data flow crosswise.

Congratulations Grazie. I'm starting to look at a new workstation to get out of this mess. Grob

This is basically the idea I had to embrace a year ago because of my initial problems. I think it is my computer, in the end, that just can't handle multiple things unless every thing is on its own disk. I can't capture/print/render to certain disk combinations. Finally, I settled on a rather odd one, but it works for me.

"I'm starting to look at a new workstation to get out of this mess." - yeah, that was me to at the begining of the week. But I persisted - now done a further PTT no BS - and now I can see my mistakes too! But that's another thread . . . just typing it up.

Grob, break free and do something - otherwise it will make you go nutz!

Have a good weekend - I will for sure

Grazie

PS - HEY GUYS - THANKS FOR ALL THE KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT OVER THE MONTHS

PPS - WHy didn't someone nail me on this sometime back? - HEY!

Where am i? Deep in the depths of the winter blahs and feeling horrid.

Errrr ... scratch that ... do over ...

Where am i? Deep in the depths of writing 3D animation & rendering code in VisualBasic and desparately trying to break open it's eerie mysteries!

Yeah, that sounds better ;)

3.1415926535897... Sorry, couldn't resist. March 14th is the official Pi day!

MyST, why so cold? Did the fire in your igloo go out? Sorry, couldn't resist that either. When my friends from Barrie get online to chat, people from Florida ask them if they sleep in igloos and hunt polar bears during the winter. I guess a lot of folks from the states don't realize that most of Alaska is farther north than where most of the Canadian population lives.

I gave up bare-handed polar bear wrestling, I was 14-0. There just wasn't a challenge in it anymore.
Here's one that isn't so funny. As you can attest to Kelly, Jan and Feb were really cold this year. I just got my electric bill for those two months(I heat by electricity also)...........$720!! OUCH! :(

If anyone from Hawaii or equiv. puts their 2¢ in, I swear I'm gonna freak!!

Grazie, ya know what, you gave me an idea! You undocked and presto, right? So, my PC has a hot printer connected, a seperate keyboard connected, a seperate microphone connected, an external drive connected, Jesh, just like being docked. So I unplugged everything, disabled the CDRW/DVD, disabled the floppy, pulled the battery, disabled power management to line/always on, disabled security stuff and unplugged the phone, and fired up fangui. Guess what?

You're supposed to guess here . . .

My camcorder went into plug and play with no probs, and a 10-min. PTT from a C copy went flawlessly! Mayabe all this device polling, power management, temp./fan control, etc, etc, etc, was overwhelming the raw power needed to maintain the data flow out? I could see the occasional demand on the processor in the performance histograms, just couldn't figure out what was still prompting the activity.

Hiho. We've got 6 feet of snow groomed up on the mountain, temps are in the 40s, got a new set of skis dirt cheap, got my milk in a carton (not a bag), and a clean PTT, what a wonderful day! Maybe V4 will show up this afternoon.

Have a GREAT weekend. Grob the Delirious.

Way to go, Grazie. I knew you would find a solution.

Are you sure you don't wnat to update your BIOS (and probably screw everything else up in the process!?!?!
