PTT from Capture Utility not recording

PeterWright wrote on 10/13/2003, 2:24 AM
I have rendered an avi and tried to put it out to tape using the Capture Utility, It starts playing out ok but it doesn't first put the DV VCR (Sony D1000E) into record mode.

If however I place the same movie on the timeline, select it and use Tools > Print to Tape > Device Control, everything works normally - it renders the W64, puts the vcr into record mode and out she goes.

Any ideas? This hasn't always behaved this way, but it is now ...

Have you UGed to V4.d in between? Device Control engaged? . . . apologies if you've done this already . . . .

No need to apologise Grazie - you're spot on!

Device Control was not enabled - I'd overlooked the fact that this affected both Capture and PTT.

Thanks mate.

. . ppheeewww . . ! Could've been nasty . . . Something must have happened to disengage the Device Control. Hence the UG question. The other thing that V4 might do it is I've started a new PTT/Cpature session and not set up the prefs. Maybe V4 goes plain vanilla to start with and then allows us to click on the Device Control - dunno . . .

Glad it's now working - really!

I'm pretty sure that Capture is a seperate application and uneffected by a new Vegas project. At least that's the way it's been working for me. I only know 'cause I'm working a series of projects with a heavy mix of analog and DV file capturing. New projects and capture sessions all the time, back and forth, on and on. aargh. DGrob

Hi Grazie! Naw, my new setup isn't in yet. Everything is in place to transition - upgraded to DVDA, upgraded to Particle Illusion 3.0, daisy-chained a couple HDs . . .

hey, I know you run a chain of HDs. If I have a drive "F" firewired in line behind "E", and I take F and run home where it would be the sole external drive which would normally default to E -- does it retain its F designation back and forth?

Anyhow, I follow your posts and understand you're very much up to your ears as well. Must be careful . . . carpal bum syndrome is only a marathon session or two away.

Best back atcha, DGrob

Your last "fixed" drive determines the next firewire I believe.

I've:

A flopps - this gets/is removed most of the time
C HD
D DVD
E CD/CDRW - this is swappsie for the A flops
. . . . . . ..
F . . . . my first F/w
G . . . . 2nd F/w
H . . . . 3rd F/W
I . . . . . .4th f/w

. . . now if I took out F, G would beocme F, H would become G and I would become H . . . . boring yeah!

Also if I left them all plugged in, on cold reboot, It would be the first drive that WinMisery would pick as be the F drive . .and that could be my physical I drive . . this has led me up the garden path on a few occasions . . . .

Hmmm. We might want to take this to a new thread.

If I use Computer 1/user 1 with my "C"-Vegas+ on it, "D"-a DVD+RW plus "E" (1st firewired video HD with a specific default vidcap, all related files, and veggies on it) for one set of projects, and "F" (2nd daisey-chained video HD with a second default vidcap, all files and veggies on it) for a second set of projects.

Then I go home to Computer 2/owner with my "C" OS HD and "F" brought from work and open up Vegas . . . when I explore will I be looking at "F" again, or some XP'd "E"? What does this do for my file references in Vegas?

I.e., 2 external HDs at work, 1 external HD at home. Vegas+DVDA at both. Will "F" interchange? Seems like you're implying I cold boot without any externals, then power them into autoplay to get my working configuration? Whata' ya???? Crazzzy?????

"Whata' ya???? Crazzzy????? - . . .well maybe . .. but, getting ones f/ws in a twist can WILL screw up your Vegas navigation.

I've had 2 f/ws switch around. Vegas attempts to open up a previoulsy stable project, but informs me that it can't find files. That's a good thing. Once I get V4 to go find, all is correct. As long as you can put up with this, it isn't really a problem. As for XP I can't comment. Don't have it. Now will XP go put external f/ws in the order you wish? I can't why or how it would. Externals are externals. Now HD caddies are something else. I know BB swears by them and I know of a Forum member who also uses them and I've seen them - it works. Caddies and f/ws . . as you say this wopuld be another thread . ..

Bottom line is as long as you only ever have the last internal drive as say "E" OR the last same drive on all the setups, bringing on an external will always - I think - default to the Global for you, f/w drive letter. Go mix tis with setups that end on different letters will force the newly attached f/w to the next letter -herein lies insanity!

. . . .. . "Crazzzzyyy??" - nah! Sometimes a bit frustrated at my lack of knowledge - WHILE I'm trying to make a go of my videography carrer.

Anyways, excellent question Grobsie. . ..

Cheers,

Grazie
