PTT from TL with Device Control

I am trying to export the rendered timeline to a JVC DVD recorder #DR-M10s. I am going firewire out from the computer just like I would to a camera. After selecting Print Video to DV tape the device set up box comes up right before capture where I should be able to choose the device control mode I want to select “use device control” but I am unable to select it as it is grayed out and “manual control” is already pre selected for me and clicking on it doesn’t change it. I went thru the options in preferences but couldn’t find anything that would let me to change the device control mode.

Another Vegas 5 user emailed me this msg. "Vegas 5 works via FireWire with my JVC DR-M10S like a charm.“I use "Print to Tape" function with Device Control selected and Vegas starts and then stops recording on JVC automatically when video has finished on timeline.”

I also tried to Print Video to DV tape from the timeline to my VX2000 with the same
results. In both cases I keep getting is “An error occurred while capturing from the device. Error 0x800705aa (message missing)”

I also tried vidcap and print to tape that didn’t work on the JVC but I could output to the VX2000.
I’m using windows 2000, and an ads pyro card, tried it on two different PC’s using both vv4 and vv5 with the same results. Tried the forum search...

Is there a way when outputting from the timeline to select the grayed out “use device control” in the device setup box?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Mark

I know that happens to me if I don't have a tape in my deck.

Thanks for the response.

I had a tape in the camera and was able to PTT from vidcap. I'm trying to figure out how to do it from the timeline.

You also will get this problem if you have the write-protect tab enabled on the tape.

Thanks John, I'm able to export to the camera from vidcap using the print to tape tab but also checked the tape again and the write protect tab is not enabled. It's printing directly from the time line that's the issue for me.

It has been suggested that as a result of widows 2000 poor support for 1394 that may well be my problem. Is anyone able to export directly from the timeline using Windows 2000.?

I am running Win2K SP4 and do not usually have any problems with PTT from the timeline. Occaisionally my system drops communication with the camera or the deck and I then shut down the device and restart it and I can move on. Three days ago I had a major problem but it was the firewire cable was not plugged in to the computer.

Since you have tried it on two PCs, this probably won't help, but I'll mention it anyway: Make sure the camera is the ONLY 1394 device attached to the computer. I have had problems with PTT when other disk drives are attached.

Also, if you are using XP, there is a 1394 glitch that can manifest itself in a number of ways. I was able to finally get PTT to work WITH my problem drive attached by downloading and installing this patch (it's from Microsoft). You can uninstall it later if you decide you don't need or want it.

In the "Divice set up box" that comes up right before capture I should be able to choose the device control mode.

I am unable to select "Use device control" as it is grayed out and “manual control” is already pre-selected. Is there a setting in Vegas that will allow me to choose "Device Control"?

It's surprising to me that a DVD-Recorder would respond to firewire commands intended for a DV tape camera or deck. Maybe there are some settings on the JVC unit to enable firewire control? You may need to hunt through the menus on that puppy.

Otherwise, there's always manual control in Vegas. I use this whenever I'm making a VHS dub from the timeline. Vegas gives you a nice countdown so you can push the "record" button in time.
