putting soft vid panels on top of other vids

i want to put panels in videos. but instead of a vid playing on the background with a square panel (using the trackfx motion option) i want to put something soft around it. i was putting cookie cutter oval and put feather around it but it still looks weird. what is the best way?

Create shapes in a photo program, such as Photoshop, and use them as mattes.

Or thow some white paint, sugar or flour on a black card. Shoot it with your camera and use them as mattes (hole cutters).
