Putting text OVER a video

shackrock wrote on 3/15/2002, 9:36 AM
Well i've done it before, but i've tried everything now and it wont work aggain!

I wanna get the text to go OVER the video (yet the video still plays in the backround...)..

for example: http://www.angelfire.com/emo/shackrockinc/video.html - then click:
-The Labjackets LIVE at Karas Death Complex - Rohs St. (must have REAL PLAYER) -

go to about 2:26 - and you'll see what i mean. The text just pops up over the video - while it still plays.

i'd post that link directly, but angelfire wont allow it.

right now when i do that, the text just takes over the video. the sounds play in the backround, but the screen goes black/white (whatever i set the BG to), and the texzt comes up, and when its done - it goes back to the video. If i put it on another track, the text doesnt show up at all.

PLEASE let me know if you know how to fix this!

thanks a million.
also - emailing me back would be best..if you can! thanks.

It sounds like you either have your Text in the track below the video or you are not using a transparent background with your media generation selection. I'm not at my machine right now but their is a selection you have to make that allows the background to be transparent. I'll check tonight and, if no one else has answered your question yet, I'll let you know how I do it.

Cheers,

Insert a track above your video track and use Insert/Text Media to create a text media event. Then you can add as many of these as you want along the track. The text media is automatically made with a black transparent background and works even if you change the words, make them a different color, size, font, effect (shadow, outline, etc.)

Alternatively, I've had success doing text with a flash maker (like Swish www.swishzone.com) and making the background blue then using the chromakey filter to back out the blue. That way you can do all sorts of fancy text effects like available in flash and have them play over your video. You can also use graphics if they don't contain the same color of blue (or whatever you use for the background).

shackrock,

Make sure when you create your text in Vegas that you choose a template with the checkerboard background, not one with black or another color. The checkerboard signifies that the background will be transparent and allow the video to show behind the text you have chosen.

You can modify the background if you have already chosen one with a colored background. Just open the event properties panel for the text and choose the Properties tab. Go to the Background Color area on the right side and play with the arrow pointing to the section with the color on the top fading to the checkerboard pattern on the bottom.

The easiest way is to click on the Text/Background tab in the bottom left side of your VV3 application. You will be offered several choices like Color Gradient etc. Just click on Text and drag and drop one of the default templates that have a checkerboard look to it just as tvwonder suggested. The Video Events FX will pop up allowing you to modify and fine tune your text. By the way, this track should be positioned above you video track. This should work.
