With Vegas you record directly to one or more tracks, whilst listening to other tracks you have already recorded.

Sound Forge is not necessary at this stage - you can use it later to post-process single events if necessary, but most of these things can also be done in Vegas.

That brings me to another question... can I play a track and record another...for example....playing the guitar track to record a bass line on it...

Have you read the help or manual? Sounds like you need to catch up on some of the basics of how a DAW in general works and how Vegas does these things.

There is a lot to learn here. You may even want to pick up the new book on Vegas written by Douglas Spotted Eagle.
