Q for Sony Admin re Madison Media Software

Coursedesign wrote on 5/25/2005, 10:02 AM
I noticed that at the bottom of each page in this forum it now says :
"© 2005 Madison Media Software, Inc.; a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America."

At the same time it says "Sony Media Software" at the top.

Is Madison Media Software, Inc. a subsidiary of Sony Pictures?

Is this the company now developing Vegas?

Yeah I also wondered about this - what's the deal?

I'm assuming it's Sony politics and company reorganisation stuff, but it'd be good to know what this is about and how, if at all, it will affect the software.

Ben

Edit: And bizarrely, I now can't find an 'About' section anywhere on this site!

I now can't find an 'About' section...

It's over here along with several other sections like Privacy Plicy, Copyright Notice, etc..

Is Madison Media Software, Inc. a subsidiary of Sony Pictures?

Sort of. From the start of their Privacy Policy Statement:
"This privacy policy statement ("Privacy Policy") applies to www.sonymediasoftware.com, acidplanet.com, any other site that Madison Media Software, Inc.; a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America ("Sony Media Software") owns and operates, and all Sony Media Software software products."

Considering that they're located in Madison, WI, I think you see where the name comes from.

Of course I understood where "Madison" came from. but it's odd to see a large company like Sony not be protective of its long established name in all subsidiaries.

This kind of anonymous name is more commonly used to reduce attention to a line on a balance sheet or income statement, to make it seem that the line refers to a 20% owned outside company (20% being the limit at which it has to be included).

It could of course also be that the company was formed before Sony figured out where SF would fit in, and that "Sony Media Software" is now simply a dba of "Madison Media Software".

From Snopes.com:
In 1953, the electronics company we now know as Sony was called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, an outfit whose primary business was the manufacture and sale of tape recorders and magnetic tape. When Akio Morita (later head of Sony America) returned from his first trip to the United States that year, he realized that the company needed a name that was recognizable (and pronounceable) outside of Japan. "Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo" was an unwieldy name and had no particular meaning to the rest of the world; its translation, "Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company," wasn't much better, and its three-letter abbreviation (TTK) had already been claimed by the Japanese national telephone company.

The inspiration for the new company name came from a brand of tape TTK had been marketing since 1950: Soni-tape. The "Soni" in "Soni-tape" was derived from the Latin sonus ("sound"), and Morita created Sony from a combination of sonus and the English phrase sonny boy, which "conveyed to him the youthful energy and irreverence he wanted at the heart of the company." (Because "o" is pronounced in Japanese with a long vowel sound, the connection between "Sony" and "sonny" is not apparent to English speakers.)

:O)

MMS has also joined to the DMA Southern California Chapter (Direct Marketing) and is a sub group of Sony Connect (so says Sony Connect legal dept.)

And Sony Connect web site should get with the times and allow browsers like firefox to work on their site -- which is a big piss off, if you wanted to use it (the web site) .. plus it is frustrating to browse. No alphabetical lists of artists. No community features, and almost no content ..

All this speaks of very consumer marketing .. IMO

Maybe they are letting the old SoFo guys be incharge of themselves & they are now their own company but run by sony.

Or (I hate to be negative) maybe it makes it easier to sell it off to someone else?

Not likely for several reasons. It really looks like Vegas, SF & Acid may be a very good fit for Sony. It's a big company, to you have to give them time to get their ducks in a row.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the XPRI synergy mentioned by a Sony honcho last week.
