Q: New to Parent/Child Tracking - The Advantages?

Due to having come over into video from music editing, I'm still in the habit of using straight track stacking as opposed to using p/c mode.

Q: Aside from simply organization advantages, are there any specific compositing, etc. advantages to using p/c, i.e. things one

I know I have to finally dive in but would like your experience to guide me on how best to use this particular modality.

compositing is much easier. it handles some things for you automatically. Very very handy if you're not using alpha channels in your videos & I belive it's the only way to apply an alpha to a non-alphaed video.

P/C relationships are awesome (including my own with my children!)

Layer modes for effects, masking, and manipulation of multiple tracks via one parent track are invaluable tools if you have the need for them. I would suggest looking deeper into the manual on the parent / child modes - it's well worth it and I'm sure you'll find a use for it eventually.

some of the absolutely coolest stuff I've ever made would have been impossible w/o the P/C relationships.

in fact if you search back one project I did with about 50 or so layers was able to be re-used by several folks (the project file was at least) and was able to help a few folks save a great deal of time and add to their creativity (which I love getting to do).

I took Dave's Veg file and made this video. He saved me a ton of work hanging all those pics and vids in a 3d space. I am glad he was willing to share. That is what I like about this place... people helping people.

ps. The baseball hitting the viewing screen at the end and cracking took up most of the time it would have taken me to hang the files- Thanks Dave!

here's some videos I did that used parent/child tracks:
- the titles use P/C
- the entire video.

P/C is so much better then what I used in Premiere (at the time, Vegas 4 vs Premiere 6). Allowed you to do a heck of a lot. Still does, really.

Sorry, it took me a while to come back -- I'm in Vegas editing land... Rendering now, break time.

I will study the clips provided and likewise thank you for them as well for all input. The ability to add effects to a whole track alone can be a time saver.

Yup, gonna have to change my music-editing ways when it comes to video :)

No one mentioned that P/C is absolutely NOT for "organizational advantage". It is not like folder tracks in Sony ACID or other apps. DO NOT use them to group tracks together to get "organized" as you will get very unexpected results.

P/C is strictly for compositing. Tracks behave different when they are children. If you are not compositing you should not be using it.
