Quad Core problem workaround ...

Ok, again, thanks to everyone who's been helping me with my Quad Core problem ...

I rebuilt my Dual Xeon computer which has been retired since I got the Quad ... found a 17" Sony Flat Screen Monitor for $20 at the local garbage dump recycle centre ... and got the machine going again. The Dual Xeon computer has a hardware SATA RAID ... not a mobo RAID like the Quad ... so that's one point of difference ... the major one for me was trying Pro 8 on a Dual Proc machine vs a Quad.

So, here are the results ...

My project (which I backed up on a 2TB external WD box to move across to the new Dual Xeon) ... opened fine ... and renders pretty well compared to the virtually zero rendering I was getting from the Quad ... I had some stability with the Quad when I turned off the secondary cores in BIOS ... but it was still crashing regularly and not allowing me to render much at all.

Anway, I now have a working solution for my film ... edit on the Quad which is fairly stable while editing ... then copy modified files only to my 2TB drive for transfer to the Dual Xeon render machine for output.

Thanks again to everyone who posted.

Looking forward to Vegas Pro 8b with hopefully enhanced Quad support.

Has anybody heard anything about a new update any time soon?

Cheers,

Really glad to hear you have a way forward.

I'm curious as to how the quad performs relative to the older dual Xeon. I've got a now old dual 3GHz Xeon Supermicro system that's been rock solid but I need to decide whether to upgrade that to the latest 8 core system or just buy a complete new quad system. The later would be cheaper but judging by your problems the former might be more reliable.

The Dual Xeons are definitely a lot slower than the Quad ... I think I may have just found something which could vindicate the Quad Core box however ... watch out for a new Topic relating to CFHD.dll and its effect on Vegas Pro 8 projects whether or not they're on a Quad or a Dual machine ...

Back to you shortly ...

I don't know if it could be related or not, but I ran into a crashing issue that had to do with heavy hard drive usage. When I would copy over 2 and 3 gig files using e-sata, the newly built machine (quad core) would hang. Come to find out, it didn't have to do with the quad core, it had to do with some intel drivers and jmicron raid drivers that needed to be updated. After I did that, it has worked flawlessly. Could your crash have to do with heavy disk usage hanging the machine in a similar way?

My motherboard (Asus P5B-VM) uses the G965 chipset, and by going to www.intel.com and in the middle box 'search support' I type G965, which then takes me here:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022768.htm
(again, don't move forward if your MB does not use the G965.

then I downloaded the top middle one.

after that I went to jmicron's site and downloaded their JMB36X controller update and it cured it all.

Hope that helps someone and have a great week. Sean
