SVCD is 480x480 pixels and VCD is 352x240, so SVCD should be noticeably sharper and clearer. Also, SVCD is usually encoded at about twice the bitrate of VCD so that there should be much less compression artifacts (little square blocks or blurriness) visible.

The downside of SVCD is that you can only fit about half as much on a disc, and that many fewer players are compatible with the format.
